Searching for a specific registry key RRS feed

  • Question

  •

With SCCM new to me, I am learning ALOT with experimenting and reading these forums.  My next task is to make a collection of clients that have a specific registry key....I am at a loss on figuring out how I would do this?  I do not see in the resource explorer where registry info is kept.....can anyone help direct me?  Thanks so much!

  • What regkey?  I ask because occasionally people will ask for a regkey (like environment variables), which are in the default sms_def.mof; but you just have to know where to look to turn it on.

I've started updating a wiki to help guide people through their first couple mof edits:  http://www.myitforum.com/myITWiki/SCCMINV.ashx.  It's not complete--I'm very vague in some areas--and I noticed that in 1 of my code sample the [] are missing from around DYNPROPS (the formatting of the wiki page, I suspect).

Another resource is on www.sccmexpert.com, the mof, get the scripts (sign up if you have to), and download configmgr snippets.  It's some created snippets from over the years; some are obsolete, but are still good examples.  There's also an e-book there to buy--written for sms2003, but still an excellent overview.

You could also just spend the $$ and get Inventory Manager from dudeworks.com

Or... just email mofmaster //at\\ smsexpert d0t com .  I'll walk you through your first one.

  • You have to customize hardware inventory (sms_def.mof and configuration.mof) before you can create collections based on that inventory data. There a some posts that deal with modifying those files (and Sherry has always great information on that topic, so watch out for her posts).

  • And you can just look at our sms_def.mof and configuration.mof files. We do inventory registry information, for example, Add/Remove Programs data is from the Registry. You could search for that in our default files and use that as a reference to add your own customizations.

  • I will have to research these MOF files.  I am new to SCCM.  I am looking for a specific registry key just to make sure everyone in the organization's pc (who has Office 2003) has the same product code.

  • Hmm... I thought that info wasn't in clear text.  I thought it was sort-of encrypted/messed up so you can't see the original code (on purpose).  I'm not sure if you'll be able to retrieve the results from the registry that you expect.

You might want to look at the Asset Intelligence reports; the License... reports.  License 01b - Microsoft license ledger item by sales channel might be a good direction; it'll report back if it was Full Packaged Product, OEM, Volume, etc.
