Windows 10 Creators Update Installation Error 0x8007001f

    Question

  • Hi,

Looking for some help with installing the Win 10 Creators Update on my laptop.

I have chosen to download and update using the Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant. The installation process gets to about 82% and then errors out displaying: "Something went wrong", <Blah, Blah> error code 0x8007001f.

    Any help greatly appreciated.

  • Use the Media Creation Tool (MCT) below :

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/software-download/windows10

Click the Download Tool Now button and RUN it.

Select Create installation media for another PC.

That will start downloading the Creators Update version 1703 iso file to your computer.

When completed, Right click at the iso file > click Mount > click Setup ( or Setup.exe )

    That will start the installation.
You are allowed to keep your files, settings and apps.
    Activation is automatic.

P.S. When installation is completed and successfully, you may want to burn that iso file to a bootable media (DVD or USB). It might come in handy should you need to do any repair or clean install.

    1. If it is a tablet, remove your sd card.

    2. Also uninstall your 3rd party anti-virus and try again. If successful, you can reinstall the AV.

    3. Similar error ? What is your exact error message ?
    This one sounds familiar ?..............

Is that real or your obfuscation for posting this extract?  Also, since there seems to be a contradiction implied by those two messages I would wonder if in fact there were about two different accounts.  Checking their context with  setupact.log  may help clarify.  I would be looking for the possibility that the user profiles were inaccessible in any way.

  • Correct, "XXXX" replaces actual user name.

One thing to note is that the "Users" folder is a junction link to folder on different volume.

  • Hi, I have the same error...

After downloading windows 10 1703 in Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant.

The installation of the update gets about to 82-83% and gives the same error 0x8007001f

here is what I have in setuperr.log

  • This is from another thread and one or more of the authors suggestions may be useful:

    https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-windows_install/windows-10-upgrade-errors/220a1eae-ce9d-4e2f-94e5-bef6d2b20c96

Disable (preferrably uninstall) your Antivirus utility before attempting the upgrade.

    • Restart a few times then try again.
    • Disable General USB Devices (example - Smart Card Reader). You can do this from the Device Manager.
    • If you have any external devices attached to the machine, disconnect them (example, gaming controllers, USB keys, external hard disk, printers, non-essential devices).
    • Load your BIOS the reset the BIOS defaults.
    • Check if there any available BIOS updates for your system, then apply them.
    • If you are using a SCSI hard disk, make sure you have drivers available for your storage device on a thumb drive and it is connected. During Windows 10 setup, click the Custom Advanced Option and use the Load Driver command to load the appropriate driver for the SCSI drive. If this does not work and setup still fails, consider switching to a IDE based hard disk.
    • Perform a clean boot, restart then try again.
    • If you are upgrading using the .ISO file, disconnect from the Internet during setup, if you are connected by LAN (Ethernet) or Wi-Fi, disable both then attempt setup again.
    • If you are updating through Windows Update, when the download reaches 100% disconnect from the Internet LAN (Ethernet) or Wi-Fi then proceed with the installation.
    • If that does not work, try using the .ISO file to upgrade if possible.
    • If you are connected to a domain, switch to a local account.

Also in another thread someone had multiple internal/external hard drives and after disconnecting/removing all except one drive they had a successful upgrade.

The 8007001f is typically a general failure

A device attached to the system may not be functioning

To Mitigate:  disconnect, update, or replace the device.

Consider disconnecting everything that is not essential, updating all drivers, placing in clean boot and then reattempting the upgrade.

In your error log there was:

2017-04-13 12:43:22, Error                 MIG    OC Exception: OC::CDownlevelOCStore::CDownlevelOCStore: Engine's InitDownlevelOCMode failed.

Maybe there is a solutions in this thread:

  • @ Vista2007new

I had a reply ready to go for your first post.  I guess this means you solved your problem?

    <paste>

    error 0x8007001f

Your image is showing  [gle=0xc00cee2b] apparently while having trouble writing some XML (perhaps some diagnostics?).  FWIW I have concluded (though I haven't seen any documented justification for this idea) that seeing the pattern gle= prefixing an error code is often a clue that it may be one that will be propagated and converted to something else in another layer.  If that idea is correct then the code you got may be associated with an XML file.

BTW capturing log extracts as text would make it much easier to discuss them.

FWIW if you snipped the code you are showing I suppose your log could have looked like this one since it does end with the one you show.

    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/da3cd688-c264-4cb1-ab19-5c811ea5685c/failing-to-upgrade-to-windows-server-2016-tp5?forum=WinServerPreview

So, perhaps you should be looking for one of the XML files that would be output by setup for clearer clues?  This page hints at a way to try to find them

  • There were multiple rows indicating problems with a user profile

There was one of them though that named the user profile.

    Is there a John?

2017-04-13 11:29:34, Error      [0x08039d] MIG    Cannot add mapping for user profile C:\Users\john. • Same Problem here with the c:\users\PROFILENAME issue. That profile exists, is on c:\users (Name is INSTALLUSER) and all other users are on c:\DATA\users.....Moved at primary install to separate OS from user Data. c:\data\ is a mounted folder from another partirion of my SSD

Regardless which one I am using and where its profile is, the error stays.

Paths in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Profilellist are ok and refer to c:\users\....

    Sunday, April 16, 2017 6:58 PM
  • Got it finally. Likely a bug with the default Profile and paths.

I used https://www.forensit.com/downloads.html to create a new default profile with an account, sitting since installation at the default position (c:\users...) and elevated that to ADMIN Group. Paths in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Profilellist checked and OK (%SystemDrive%\Users...). Logged out with my standard account, login as the upgraded account, disconnected my partition with the other (family) users, rebooted, and let the upgrade run from USB key.

This time it worked. Dunno what was wrong, but its the redirected user / admin profile and likely an attempt to write something to the "default user profile". Which was initially not where it was expected, regardless what the reg settings said. With the new default user it suddenly worked.

Happy eastern, how I hate that WinX does not separate user data from OS. Took me two (mostly rainy) days.

  • Hi jmarden,

According to the error messages, it seems that there is something wrong with the John account. We could backup the user profile and delete the John account.

Try to login with the build-in administrator account and upgrade in clean Boot environment.

How to perform a clean boot in Windows

    Best regards,

  • I was having the same issue with pretty much the same messages in the setuperr.log file. I tried everything mentioned in just about all the troubleshooting methods. Finally in the registry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList I changed my profile path from C:\Users\%username% to D:\Users\%username. (Yes, I had a junction from C:\Users to D:\Users.) After doing this the Creators Update installed without issues. Of course, it deleted the junction and installed C:\Users again, but that's easy enough to correct. I have read about some issues where Microsoft says you should not set a junction for either C:\Users or C:\ProgramData, as updates may be problematic. Also the registry path for your version may be HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ProfileList (Windows instead of Windows NT).

  • I am also having issues installing creators update on a PC.  I know that the PC type should work as I have another PC that is virtually the same machine, and it ran creators update with no problem.

I have tried using Update assistant, and it gives me the "something went wrong" error message.  So I tried using the instructions provided here, and I keep getting the message "we can't tell if your PC has enough space to continue installing Windows 10." - I have a 260Gb Hard Drive, 8 GB DDR3 Ram, so there should be plenty of "space" - any ideas now?

  • have a 260Gb Hard Drive, 8 GB DDR3 Ram, so there should be plenty of "space"

Other partitions may be referred to by such a vague message.  There would be a multitude of diagnostics available, more than just the usual ones people think of.

C.f.  (for an example diagnostic methodology)

  • The free space can be confusing.

You may be thinking the free space to create and save new files.

What the upgrade tool may be looking for is the amount of free space on the partition.

This information can be obtained by view the panther logs.

On of my computers failed to upgrade from 1607 to 1703.

In the panther logs I found that it was looking for more free space.  The exact numbers I no longer remember.  Perhaps it was looking for 15 and only found 9.

The partition size was not changed.  The contents of the partition was changed.

If you need help with this let us know.  You can create a new thread.

  • As a number of people report it has something to do with problems with the user profile. This seems to be the same problem I had, but before I fixed this I did a number of things that are common to fixing upgrade errors that are also stated in this thread, so these things may have played a roll in overcoming the blue screen of death:

    Turn off antivirus and firewall

    Turn off secure boot

Do a Windows clean boot (plenty of information on the web on how to)

Use Media Creation Tool instead of windows update over internet (I used a USB but I think mounting a image is ok or using a burned in Media Creation Tool CD is fine also)

I created another Administrator User Profile

    Still Failure

    Then I:

Brought up the Command prompt run as administrator (CMD)

    sfc /scannow

    no errors found

than I ran in the CMD

    DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

    more information on this here:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/947821/fix-windows-update-errors-by-using-the-dism-or-system-update-readiness

On the DISM it needs a clean image of the Win 10 or a media creation tool (Windows install disc) to get the uncorrupted files from to make fixes. In my case the USB Media Creation Tool

After this, my update went through.

Strange part is that the administrator profile I usually use (old) now had the new administrator profile user's folder. The old administrator profile user folder was now unattached to any user profile.  The new administrator profile I had created earlier had a new user folder computername.profilename with the profile name being the same as it had been when I created it but now was used by the old administrator profile. You will now have to change the settings to your preference in your old user account.

Obviously something was wrong with the my user accounts connecting to my user folder before I started the update. Hope that helps some people.
