Migrate de-duplicated data from one DPM server to another RRS feed

  • Question

  • We are replacing our DPM 2012 R2 server hardware and storage and I have a quick question about “pre-staging the data” by creating a manual replica on the new server.  The protection group members on the old DPM server are de-duplicated volumes from 2012 R2 file servers on our WAN.

Unfortunately, DPM doesn’t support chaining of deduped protected volumes.  Therefore, moving to the new DPM server is not a simple matter of setting up DPM chaining with the new server and switch protection server. Because of the “chunk store” involvement, it is unlikely that the method described at https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff399552.aspx to pre-stage replica data will work.

So, is there a way to migrate already de-duplicated data from one DPM server to another that doesn’t involve rehydrating the data and then a consistency check which may transfer large amounts of data across our WAN.

  • Anyone?

Transferring all backup data across WAN links does not sound like an acceptable solution....

  • Bueller?... Bueller?... Bueller?...

Seriously, am rapidly approaching the start of this project. If anyone has been in this situation, I really would like to hear from you.

The prospect of having to transfer this data over the WAN link isn’t appealing.
