    Preliminary information:

    • Xeon X5650 @ 2.67GHz (2 processors)
    • 24GB RAM
    • Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard (64-bit) with all updates installed (barring IE9)

    This base install is running the following Hyper-V virtualized machines:

    1. Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard w/ all necessary domain services (AD, Application and DNS servers, File Services, and Web Server (IIS))
    2. Windows 7 Professional 32-bit
    3. Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard w/ only Application Server and Remote Desktop Services

    I have run through the Step-by-Step Guide for Deploying Microsoft RemoteFX on a Remote Desktop Session Host Server, but every time I have installed the RemoteFX role service and enable the service via server management, the host server hangs whenever I attempt to alter the settings for a virtual machine in Hyper-V.  After reading several articles here on the boards, the only "solution" is that this is "working as intended" because RemoteFX cannot run on the same machine as AD DS...however, in this case, RemoteFX is not installed on the server running AD DS.  Sadly, I am at the end of my rope as far as troubleshooting and googling possible solutions, so any help would be appreciated in figuring out what is going on.

    Could you please provide this additional information:

    Does the host have a RemoteFX capable graphics card installed?

    For use RemoteFX you need Windows 7 Enterprise/Ultimate with SP1.

    Thank you Mike and Denis for responding, I'll reply in order here:

    Mike: my apologies for not being as complete with the system setup in my OP.  The server and all VMs have been upgraded with any service pack available (especially in the case of the WS2008R2 VMs).  Additionally, I have attempted the following GPUs (admittedly, only one of them is an older workstation model Quadro, but at least one of the consumer-grade GPUs exceed the minimum hardware requirements):

    • Nvidia Quadro FX 380 (16 stream processors, 256MB DDR3 RAM)
    • Nvidia GeForce 8400GS (8 stream processors, 1GB DDR2 RAM)
    • AMD Radeon HD 4670 (320 stream processing units, 1GB DDR2 RAM)

    The main difficulty in GPU choice is the space limitation: I would have liked to have plugged in my old AMD 4870, but the motherboard was horribly designed and the PCI-E x16 slot only has 7" before it runs into a network controller card bracket.  With that in mind, would there be a consumer-grade card that would be better suited?  I am able to convert one of the 4-pins to a 6-pin power connector, so that should expand GPU choices by a tiny bit.

    Denis: Would the RemoteFX host not work in the Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 installs as well?  Or is it expressly restricted to Win7 Enterprise/Ultimate?

    This seems to focus around a consumer CPU (there were wild discussions a while about hyper-v problems when Sandy Bridge got out), but the symptoms seems rather similar.

    RemoteFX are only officially supported on some Nvidia Quadro and ATI Firepro cards. I know that there are Geforce and Radeon cards that posesses the features required for RemoteFX, but there are are no official lists on which.

    You are correct in that the situation sounds pretty similar, which is why I exhausted everything in the links that other thread provided.  The Xeon x5650 is a SLAT enabled processor (based on Nehalem architecture), and the GPU *should* suffice.  And while we do have a network management card that uses an XPDM driver, it's not until I run the cap driver and enable the cap driver services that the hanging on the Hyper-V VM settings pages occurs.  And I really wish those Quadro (or even the officially supported FirePro) cards would be viable.  Because of the bracket for the network management card, absolutely no card longer than 7" will fit in the case.  This limits me to the Quadro 2000 (or lower-end) workstation card or Nvidia GeForce 440 (Fermi) card.  The frustrating part of all this is that this essentially caps the server to an Nvidia GPU with 96 or fewer CUDA cores.

    If we're disabling the network management card anyways, maybe a hack-saw can fix all of my GPU problems...

    I apologize for the bumping, but if there's one thing I've learned over years of using forums, it's that if a post leaves the first page, it is doomed to not get answered.  With that being said, any new ideas on what might be going on and what a possible solution might be?

    It has now been over a month since I made this thread and received a response and, as I had feared, this topic has been buried with no resolution in sight.  I am getting the distinct impression that RemoteFX is not quite ready for deployment and actual use in a virtualized environment (or, at the very least, not a viable option with a Dell PowerEdge server).

     

    If I am mistaken, please let me know.

    Same problem with a Radeon HD 6450.

    When I installed the RemoteFX cap driver I got the settings hang you were talking about so I removed it:

    dism /online /disable-feature /featurename:Microsoft-Windows-RemoteFX-EmbeddedVideoCap-Setup-Package

    Now the VM starts with the 'Video Remoting Disconnected' which is fine but I can't connect using RDP.

    Looks like the GPU doesn't have enough juice, getting this in the event viewer:

    The GPU or system resources are insufficient for this server to run as a RemoteFX host. Verify this server's hardware against the requirements. Status Code: 20.

    and

    The GPU or system resources are insufficient for this server to run as a RemoteFX host. Verify this server's hardware against the requirements. Status Code: 13.

    You may want to contact PSS, its very likely that since RemoteFX is so new there are very few with experience with it.

    I don't believe it, spent hours trying to get this working and a simple hotfix was all it needed.  Seems hyperv was using the integrated video instead of the the GPU card!

    Here it is, confirmation in the event log on the vm:

    Remote Desktop Protocol will use RemoteFX module to connect to the client computer. RemoteFX module is being used based on the server configuration, client configuration, and network connection.
