  • #1 - Version of Outlook (before and after formatting if you installed a new version of Outlook)?
#2 - Why are you importing - the normal process would have been to just use your old PST file when you re-configured the email account(s) which begs the primary question - "can you <open> the original PST file directly in Outlook via File --> Open sequence?
#3 - First recovery option would always be to run ScanPST on the PST file before using a 3rd party tool
#4 - If you copied the PST file while Outlook was open - quite possible the PST file got corrupted to the point of not being recoverable

Other option is to use some good tool to repair your pst file choose the best one after comparison here http://www.outlookrepairtools.com/comparison/

The copy of PST file was corrupt, I had another copy stored on my external drive imported the same and now Outlook works fine.

  • You must try to repair the PST file with inbuilt Inbox Repair Tool also known as Scanpst.exe Create a copy of PST file before using any tool on the file. The correct method to repair the PST file is mentioned here in the article http://www.filerepairtools.com/tips/repair-pst-file-with-inbox-repair-tool/

Sometimes it is needed to run the PST Repair Tool three or four times to remove all errors from the PST file.

  • Hi, Ankit,

Based on your description, your backup PST file is corrupt.

The Outlook PST file format is very complex. It starts with a file header containing the meta information of the whole file, followed by several parts containing the actual data. You can find more detailed information about the Outlook PST file format by searching on Google with the keyword “Outlook PST file format”. If the file header containing the meta information is corrupt, or any follow-up parts are damaged or corrupted, then you will not be able to open the file correctly with Outlook. In such a case, the first step is to try to use the built-in repair or recovery function in the Outlook, to see if it can repair or recover corrupted Outlook PST file for you. If not, then you need to resort to a third-party Outlook recovery tool to scan the corrupted file and retrieve all recoverable data for you. It is also possible to find a data recovery expert or company to do the task, but in most of the cases, they will also use a third-party tool to do the recovery for you.

The main difference between using the software by yourself and by a third-party service company is:
    (1) The company is familiar with the data recovery industry so he knows which software is the best one. While you need to search and compare the software online by yourself, which is time-consuming.
    (2) The company purchases the software for multiple usages, while you purchase the software for one-time usage only. So normally the service fee may be cheaper than the license fee for the software.
    (3) DIY will keep your data confidential while do the recovery via a company may cause data breach.

If you want to perform a DIY recovery, then you can try the Microsoft offical tool scanpst, also called Inbox Repair Tool. It can repair the PST file, you can refer the following articles:

Hope this will help. Good Luck!

  • If your Outlook PST files are get corrupted then it is the worst situation for, because you can't open them, view them or read them. There is a  possibility of repair them manually by going into Inbox repair tool --> scanning them -->and repairing them, but it is the long and complex way.

The best way is by using repairing tools, you can download SysInfotools PST Files Repair. it is swift and safe, it worked on encrypted and password protected file too, and support multiple formats like PST, MSG, MBOX, DBX & EML You can use free PST file recovery software for Preview of recovered data
