  • Question

  • When I run the backup it's not completing successfully. I'm getting an error code <Data Name="HRESULT">2155348315</Data> . Can anyone help with this issue. I have made sure that the permission are set and that a user name and password was created for the backup.

  • Please temporary disable the anti-virus. If the issue still occurs, please open the skipped log. The log is stored in C:\Windows\Logs\WindowsBackup. The format of the file name is “000-00-00 000000_error.log”. From the log you will see which files were not backed up.

Please let us know if the issue occurs this time. If the issue reoccurs, please open Event Viewer, locate to “Application and Service Logs\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsBackup\ActionCenter”, try to find the backup process that cause the hanging issue.

Did you include a system image backup? If so, how does it work if you do not include a system image backup?

  • How do I view the window backup.etl file? I tried running a backup without the image and that didn't work. I also looked at the action center and it doesn't show any errors.

  • Elijah,

Regret the inconvenience. Can you please send the etl files after the failure to Soudamini[dot]Sreepada[at]microsoft[dot]com. I would work with you offline to get the issue resolved.

  • I upgraded to win 7 from vista and I also am having a problem trying to back up my files.  I have tried with and with out the image backup.  Doesn't seem to matter.  You were working with Elijah offline, but this may be a common problem from what I am seeing.  could you please post some sort of resolution?

  • I'm experiencing the same situation as jjkerley311, and I haven't been able to find a solution in the forums or elsewhere. Here's what I get:

"A shadow copy could not be created. Please check "VSS" and "SPP" application event logs for more information. Details: The shadow copy provider had an error. Check the System and Application event logs for more information. Error code 0x81000019"

    Please help! Thanks.

  • Windows 7 Ultimate image backup can not back up to DVD's:  It goes through the process, making the shadow copies and whatnot, asks for the first blank disc, it warns you that it needs to format it, you tell it to go ahead.  It proceeds with the backup.  But then, after a long while, it says that there is not enough space on the disc.  You try another disc, same deal.  I've tried both DVD+R discs and DVD+RW discs with the same result.

I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on both of my machines (Asus P5Q, Intel Q9560, 8 GB RAM and HP Entertainment PC dv6934 with 3 GB RAM and Intel Centrino Core 2 DUO T5750)

Windows Vista Ultimate x64 full image backup to DVD works just fine on these machines.

Thanks for pointing to this post, but it isn't my problem.  Mine was already set to on for system protection.

Thanks for posting, but I am not trying to use a DVD.  I have a USB portable hard drive that I used when I backed up under VISTA.  The error I am getting is "The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002)".  It would be very nice it it would say what file it is trying to find, but that might be too helpful in figuring out how to fix this irritating problem.

By the way, this last attempt was with the image copy turned of.

  • Well, I am sure this won't help any one else, but my back up just completed.  The only thing I did was using a different USB portable hard drive.  When I did the win 7 upgrade, it wasn't a complete new install.  The only thing I can think is the first drive is what I used for my vista backups.  Somehow, maybe this was confusing the process.  Anyway, it just worked.  Wish I could help somebody else with this, but I doubt it will mean anything to anyone else.

Do you include a system image backup? Where is the location of the backup?

I noticed that the computer is in domain. Are you the domain admin? I suspect that some data is not accessible due to domain security policies. Do you temporarily disable the anti-virus before backup?

Additionally, you may run the command vssadmin list writers > %userprofile%\desktop\vsswriters.txt. Then open the file vsswriters.txt on Desktop and see if there is any error on certain writers.

Did you ever find an answer the the backup error 2155348315?

  • Elijah,

I had sent a mail to you stating that its a failure to write to the network location. You should check the network connectivity or an issue with the network device that you are using.

  • Hi Elijah W & Soudamini.

I am interested to know if you have solved the "2155348315" problem.

    My status-
    Win7 Pro on a Vaio.
Trying to back up - Vaio wireless link to Belkin FSD8635 router, wired via Netgear GS105 switch to Netgear ReadyNAS NVX.
1st try - System Image. Failed after about 19GB. Completely hung the Vaio which lost wireless access. Backup would not close from "Cancel" or task manager. Vaio would not shutdown. Had to remove mains power & battery. (Errors 0x8078015B & 0x80070040 - not surprising that it couldn't find the folder and then that the network name was no longer available!)
2nd try - just normal files backup (no System Image). Managed about 300MB, before failing with the 2155348315 error message.
3rd try - normal backup again. Failed after 2MB, hanging the wireless but at least allowing me to gracefully back out of the Backup program.

I only managed to save 1 evtx file. Can't seem to find event logs for the first and 3rd failures!!

If you can help I would be very grateful. I have 2 other computers on my home network and was counting on the NAS to save me wondering around the house with various external HDD's every week :-)

    Many thanks,

  • Hi,

This can happen due to intermittent network issues. In this case, copying the file from the local machine to target disk fails intermittently with semaphore time out issue.
You need to check the network settings.

    Thanks,
    S.Soudamini.

  • Thank you.

I'm still on this. Unfortunately I have been unwell recently. Now I'm getting back to solving this and a couple of other issues with my NAS. I have a support call to make to Netgear this week.

Before I do that, please can you tell me which network settings I should be looking at? Any thoughts on potential changes to make?

I appreciate your time. Many thanks.

  • Any news on this? Been having the same error running a backup of a Windows 7 64b system over my network server (WHS). Ran the backup several times. It has worked before but has been failing in the last couple of weeks giving me all kinds of errors...
Either network share no longer available, not enough space, permission or other...
But I have been getting error 2155348315 as well several times (more often than anything else). It seems to almost complete the backup but then doesn't correctly finish.

    Any thoughts?

  • I finally got a final resolution to my problem.  I have a HP computer and there was a specific problem to the motherboard/usb bridge drivers and WIN 7.  HP had a fix from MS that hadn't been released to the general public thru an update.  More or less a beta.  I installed the fix and have not had any problems since.  I would suggest you contact your computer manufacture to see if they have anything that might help.

  • LOL... good to hear.... I'm guess I'm SOL, I'm the computer Manufacturer so unless Microsoft somehow manages to discover the issue I guess I won't be backing up that system...

  • I'm responding to this message because this worked for me. I was able to complete the back up when I turned the Firewall off.   Thank you!

  • so, i know this is an old post, but for anyone that is searching for a solution for the "0x8078015b" backup error, i have the solution.

I had the same error when trying to backup and this is what i did to fix it.

It seems that the target that you should save the backup, MUST have at least twice the free space of the size of your backup.

So when i tried to backup my 74GB system disk on a 120GB (free space) HDD i kept getting the 0x8078015b error, but when i changed the save target on a 500GB HDD (the amount of free space i had on a 1TB HDD), the backup process completed without errors.

And after some search on the onternet i also found some other forum posts that were stating the same.
YOU MUST HAVE TWICE THE FREE SPACE ON THE TARGET YOU ARE SAVING YOUR BACKUP.
