Need to automate resource creation in PPM RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi

I am working on Project Server 2013 and we are actually trying to automate the resource set up in PPM.

We usually get a excel sheet with all new resources who need to be set up in PPM, but setting up resources one by one takes away lot of productive time, hence we are trying to automate the resource creation process.

Looking for some automation such that the solution fetches the resources details from an excel/csv file and creates resources in PPM. And schedule this automation once in a week (Off business hours).

Can you pls suggest/guide if anyone has come across such a requirement? Looking for a detailed solution.

    Thanks.

  • Assuming you are only talking about resources pool and not permissions,

There are several ways to achieve this, however the most simplistic would be to use AD Sync, Create an AD group and add the group to the Project Server Security Group / Resource Pool sync, however note it may not bring up all resource attributes, another option would be to create them manually using Project Pro, open the resource center in Project pro and pretty much you can copy and paste the resources however note this method would not assign the permissions automatically, the last would be to develop a custom program using PSI/CSOM(Check SDK for the same) to import resources from excel and add them to the Resource pool, thinking loud, i believe custom program may also be written in PowerShell or you can use .NET

Let me know if this helps

  • If you have the resources in an Excel Sheet, its very easy to create them.

You go to PWA, Resource Center, Select a random resource, select Edit I Project Pro in the ribbon.

Now Project Pro opens the Resource Sheet and you can paste the resources directly into the sheet. Then done you just hit the save button and the new resources are created.

It pays off to align the columns in the excel sheet and the Resource Sheet in Project Pro.

An automation of this could be made fairly easily.

  • Thanks.  But we are looking for an automation such that there will not be any manual intervention for creating resources in PPM.

We get the data from Oracle HR system and it will be in .csv/.xls format. The solution should be able to read the data from .csv/.xls file periodically and create resources in PPM. Please suggest.

  • As i mentioned in my earlier post for full automation you will need to develop a custom program see details below

"would be to develop a custom program using PSI/CSOM(Check SDK for the same) to import resources from excel and add them to the Resource pool,  i believe custom program may also be written in PowerShell or you can use .NET "

  • A server solution would be to write a batch job running on the server with sufficient permission to read the .csv-file (preferred) on its position.

This would be developed in c# using the standard web service interfaces of project server.

The batch job would be scheduled using windows server task scheduler.

A log of results from processing could conveniently be provided for the administrator or other end users in a SharePoint list.

Allow me to be direct and recommend a dialog with my company for further advise or delivery of this functionality.
