Pointing Content Database from a different Sharepoint Farm RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a Sharepoint Farm with one Application Server (Sharepoint Administration) that connect to a Database Server. I have Webapplications created in this server pointing to this database

I will be creating a new Sharepoint farm with an Application Server using the same Database instance as above.

Now i need to create a web application in the second farm and point the content database to the first farm.

Is this possible ? What are the steps

  • Hello,

I hardly think its possible to attach same content database across farms.

You'll need to replicate the database and then you can connect.

  • Can i delete the Webapplication without delecting the database and then point this database to another farm?

  • Absolutely.

Dettach the content database from web application.

Perform activity on the web app (delete/make changes etc.)

Bring back the web app online.

    Attach content databases again

You should find the information here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc262486(v=office.12).aspx

    Hope this helps,

  • Ensure your new farm has the same Service Packs, CU's and hotfixes as your old one and follow the advice already given.
