SharePoint 2013 Cannot retrieve the information for application credential key RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi All,

I got an error while creating a site collection
Cannot retrieve the information for application credential key

I referred this blog https://blog.hompus.nl/2010/06/01/using-the-people-picker-over-a-one-way-trust/ and

    a)
STSADM.exe -o setapppassword -password “Project124” set the   setapppassword –password “Project123” and provided the two domain credentials, Contoso and ABC domain as shown

    b) STSADM.exe -o setproperty -propertyname peoplepicker-searchadforests -propertyvalue "domain:contoso.com,contoso\spfarm,p@ssword;domain:abc.com, abc\aroh,123456" -url http://sharepoint2013.contoso.com

and is able to get the users from both the domains i.e. Contoso and ABC.

However, while I create a new site collection I am still getting the same error.
Cannot retrieve the information for application credential key

I ran the same commands again
    a) STSADM.exe -o setapppassword -password “Project124”
    b) STSADM.exe -o setproperty -propertyname peoplepicker-searchadforests -propertyvalue "domain:contoso.com,contoso\spfarm,p@ssword;domain:abc.com, abc\aroh,123456" -url http://sharepoint2013.contoso.com

Both the doman accounts are shown yet again.
I can’t to while I create a new site collection and getting same error.
Q: What could be the potential issue?

    Q: Does resetting the
    setapppassword solve the issue?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hi Sandy,

    1. If you receive the error, because no credential key has been established and the credentials could not be encrypted.

To establish a credential key, you should run STSADM -o setappassword -password password.

    2. Yes, resetting the setapppassword can solve the issue.

  • Thanks Trevor and Sara for your valuable time.

After some research, i found that People Picker script has to run on EACH web Server.
    Steps I followed:

Step1: Execute STSADM commands the ALL SharePoint Servers (APP and WEB)

    a) STSADM.exe -o setapppassword -password <<KEY>>
Note: Key could be anything but you need it keep is safe.  For e.g. STSADM.exe -o setapppassword -password “ProjectX”

    b) STSADM.exe -o setproperty -propertyname peoplepicker-searchadforests -propertyvalue "domain:contoso.com,contoso\spfarm,p@ssword;domain:fabrikam.com, fabrikam \aroh,123456" -url http://sharepoint2013.contoso.com

tep2: Verify the User accounts on each server

  • Can you try running Initialize-SPResourceSecurity to see if that fixes it, or if it allows you to properly set the application password? Or use the PowerShell method to set it instead.
