Hyper V - How to expand a VHD when a AVHD file exist RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a 2008 VM with three fixed disks running on a Hyper V 2008 R2 cluster.

One of the disks (drive F) is running out of space and I tried to expand it not realising that there was a AVHD file, I got a broken chain error that I repaired with VHDtools.

The VHD parent file was last modified on 2/12 while the AVHD file of course has the most current modified date and time

    The questions are:-

    1) What would have a caused the creation of a AVHD file on 12/2/2011 as while I am not the only one with admin access to the server, no has admitted to attempting to take a snapshot on that date, which is Saturday at 8:38 am, the only running at that time would have been a backup job.

    2) How do I expand one of the drives that is running out of space without running into problems. I understand that I need to merge the VHD and the AVHD but how do I do this properly.

    3) Does the merge require work space to complete? The parent VHD is 420GB and the AVHD is 30GB and I have 2GB free space.

    4) Can I merge a VHD and AVHD on a system drive?

    Thanks for your help
