DPM 2012 as a virtual server and FC connections to tape RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello everyone,

We're about to install DPM 2012 R2 as a virtual server in a VMware 5.1 cluster.

My current DPM 2010, which is a physical server, connects to a DELL PowerVault 3600T using FC to connect to six tape drives.

The documentation on DPM 2012 states, and some of the information I've read on these forums, that using FC to connect to tape drives isn't supported. The information I read is about Hyper-V, but I was wondering if the same applies to VMware. Also, is this a limitation with DPM 2012 or with Windows Server 2012?

  • Hi,

Right now, I believe the reason for not being supported is because Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-v does not support it.

This is documented in the following TechNet articles.

DPM: Installing DPM in a virtual environment -

Windows: Hyper-V Virtual Fibre Channel Overview -

When the Windows operating system supports fibre channel connected tape libraries using vFC, then the DPM team will re-evaluate support for this.   With that said, you can try using it on a VMware server and see if DPM will work with it.

  • Correct, I read the same information about Microsoft Hyper-V, but I was asking more for people using VMware, which is what we use.

I guess I'm going to have to try and see if it works.
