I have tried system restore, reset update components, checked certificate and date/time and still no luck. Windows update fails with error code 80072F8F on Windows 7 Home Premium x64. Any help appreciated!Wednesday, December 3, 2014 11:16 AM

As you have already tried a several things to resolve the issue so I am suggesting the following:
Fix Windows corruption errors by using the DISM or System Update Readiness tool

Is this problem occures during checking Windows update? The contents of the link below is provide a specific solution about this error code:

Option 2: downloading Fix It tool 50202 to reinstall Windows Update completely

If that doesn't help i would try system readiness tool

Hi,
Since all of above method is not helpful with your problem, maybe we need to collect and analyze the Windows update.log and CBS.log.
Please access to the path below to collect these two log files and share with us.
WindowsUpdate.log: C:\Windows
CBS.log: C:\Windows\Logs\CBS
