Hyper-V MPE 2016 VHD Error Count Monitor RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have the Hyper-V 2016 Management Pack Extensions installed into my SCOM 2016 installation.

I'm seeing a bunch of the following errors:

Hyper-V MPE 2016 VHD Error Count Monitor

    Instance PATH.avhdx
    Object Hyper-V Virtual Storage Device
    Counter Error Count
    Has a value 5
    At time 2019-12-12T13:58:06.0000000+00:00

I don't know what this counter actually means, and I can find no information on the web that explains it.  The notes on this counter say "The Error count should always be zero for the virtual storage device", which of course has me concerned that it is a real problem.

Does anyone know what this means and why it happens?

After doing research, I find a similar issue with yours. The issue is fixed by installing the Windows updates.

  • Hi Tony,

the same question is also asked in the forum, Crystal referenced: Are you suing a Pass-through disk?
If not there can be many different reasons for those alerts

As all the different monitoring solutions are monitoring the same counter "Hyper-V Virtual Storage Device\Error Count" this is more of an Hyper-V related question. SCOM is only reporting the counter value.
I would definetely recommend you posting in the Hyper-V forums, where you will get more accurate information on how to troubleshoot this. Here a link to the forum:

  • Thanks for your response.

This problem has been ongoing for months, on Windows Server 2016 VMs, running on Windows Server 2016 Hypervisor cluster.

During that time, all hypervisor servers have been patched to the latest monthly CU and SSU multiple times, so it's not an issue related to windows update at the Hypervisor level.

I will check if the issue correlates with unpatchedVMs.  If it does, I'll ensure those VMs are patched and see if it fixes the issue.
