Project Server 2010 Medium Dataset -- Analysis Services Installation RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

We have Project Server 2010 instance, currently two tier architecture (2 WFEs load balanced, and APP&DB roles on 1 physical server), and we are adding the 3rd tier separating the App and DB role. Question is what is the best approach on installing Analysis Services? Is it better to install Analysis Services Server on Application Server leaving the Analysis DB on DB server?... I would see following 3 options...

1- Analysis Services Server Component on App Server, Analysis Services DB on Database Server

2- Analysis Services Server and DB both on App Server (but this will add SQL Server License cost, we are okay as long as if this is the best approach from performance perspective)

3- Analysis Services Server and DB both on DB server

I would like know some guidance on which one is a better option in terms of best performance.

  • Hi Kishore,

In this scenario, I would think of using option 3, which is installing AS and DB on same server. AS would be used fro OLAP cube building which can be schedule to rebuild every night during non peak hours, unless your business requirement is rebuilding cube more frequently.

Are you also planning to install Reporting Services?

  • Just one thing to note, I have seen AS eat lots of RAM - make sure the SQL box has enough RAM to handle this (by that I mean > 4GB for a smallish soln.  If this is a new box, I'm sure you're using 16GB+ anyway, so this shouldn't be an issue.
