how to migrate sharepoint 3.0 from one server to another? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Right now we have a server that is off the network. It has a sharepoint 3.0 website installed using a local SQL 2005 database.

I want to migrate the website to another server that I have setup and I want the database to be housed in our separate database server running SQL 2005.

Can anyone point me to a document that details this process? I tried restoring the database to a new sharepoint site...and it didnt work. I've been pretty much trying to wing-it with the migration with no success.

  • Overall the process is as follows

First Prepare the content database  for moving by running stsadm prepare to move

Second restore the  database using SQl management to your target server

Create a blank sharepoint site on your final server using Central admin

Using central admin detach the content database from your newly created site

Attach the content database to the new site using stsadm attachcontentdb

    That is pretty much it.

This is a detailed document on how to do it

  • You should follow the steps here, you can't just use the other links listed becuase it's using WMSDE (local DB) the links provided here only give you a route from SQL to SQL.  Look at this thread. http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/sharepointadmin/thread/5054faa2-5205-478b-8ada-6d944d03c50a
