Single list item change results in multiple items on list touched RRS feed

  • Question

  • platform moss sp2007, service pack 3

A Win7/Office 2010 user reports that she edited 1 item on a sharepoint list, but as a result thousands of alerts were sent. That seemed possible - but then we asked for examples of the emails, and found that the thousands of emails were indicating that many list items had been deleted.

The user had not touched those items... except...

when we go to the library, and look at modification date and user, 832 items are listed as modified by the user within a 2 minute period of time.

The user was NOT using data spreadsheet mode.

She was using the standard out of the box list item form display mode.

The other odd thing is that the timestamp on the change was 15 minutes after she left work.

There is nothing in the 12 hive or event logs for the farm that indicate that 800+ items were being modified.

There are no workflows established on the list.

We are stymied by this situation. The user is hesitant to make further changes. We have no clue what might cause this.

Has anyone else ever seen something like this?

  • Is it a document librarary?  Is anyone possibly using "View in Windows Explorer" mode for bulk copies / edits etc.

Are there also any automated prpcesses involving timer jobs?

Are there any Information Policies set-up on the document library?  You can check these in the list/library settings.

    1. Not a library - just a list

    2. No, they were not using windows explore mode

    3. There was no workflow associated with the list and developers do not have permissions to set up other automated processes.

    4. I do not believe there were any info policies - only sys admins have the rights to create them and there are only a handful of admins all in my group.
