"you'll need a new app to open this ms-project" RRS feed

  • Question

  • When opening a project from Project Online in the Project 2016 Desktop app this error comes up "you'll need a new app to open this ms-project" and the file will not open in desktop. The file opens fine using 'Open' in  Project 2016 Desktop, requesting the file from the Project Online server. Fille associations (for MPP are fine).

The error seems to coincide with a Windows 10 update.

  • Updates can have an effect.  Office updates may have happened as well.

Check if project version is correct.

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/projectonline/project-online-client-requirements

    Also check project online settings.

    For example /PWA settings/Additional settings

Project professional versions specify a minimum version number and perhaps this was updated

I would like to see a screenshot of the exact dialog you are seeing.  I have never seen an error message like you are describing.  Please post a screenshot of the dialog if you can.  And also describe the exact steps you have followed to open an enterprise project.  Please let us know and we will try to help you.

  • Thanks for the reply Michael, where specifically should I check for the correct version?

  • It's at the top of Additional server settings '15.0.9999.1000' which is for 2013. Should I change this to 16.0.4266.1000 for Project Professional 2016?

Will I be able to change and change the setting back safely?

  • It won' be the minimum version number, because you can connect directly from MS Project to Project Online/Server.   This issue is always with the browser creating the right initiation string to open MS Project, and an account existing in MS Project for the correct PWA instance (although this is also created automatically (or the attempt is made at least)).

Do you have a different experience if MS Project is already open.

    Can you try different browsers.

Failing any of the above working, I'm afraid your options are

    1. Raise a call with MS

    2. Initiate opening projects from MS Project.

  • Hi Ben,

I changed the server setting to Project 2016 and cleared the Project desktop cache - no difference.

Do you have a link for me to report the issue to Microsoft please?

    Thanks

    Stewart

  • OK so solved it myself:

OK some notes on when you cannot launch Project from PWA (AFTER A MICROSOFT WINDOWS 10 UPDATE)– follow this procedure to get it working again:

    1) deleted the project cache. No difference

    2) checked the project version (install unistall app shows the version) and put in PWA settings. No difference.

    3) uninstall project (using (install unistall app shows the version).

    4) reinstalled project (32 bit version) - Office 365, Explore all your apps, install office, other install options, scroll down to project, install the 32 bit version

5)Couldn’t find OneNote from the Office365 menus. it also deleted OneNote. Reinstall onenote: https://support.office.com/en-us/article/onenote-2016-is-missing-after-installing-office-2019-or-office-365-1844ba87-7248-4bd8-a735-66a52f98e6e5

Which is https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=2024197  (32 bit version)
