Installing Management Server on an ESX Virtual Server RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello, does anyone know why we cannot install App-V Management server on a virtual ESX server? I can do the install successfully but I cannot get the app-v management server service to start. Server is running Windows 2008r2.

    Thanks

    Ian

  • Hello, think I've fixed my problem. In the data sources table of my database I had a record which read hostname set to local and the port number set to null. I've changed these to the correct names and ports and now my Management Server Service will start.

    Thanks Znack and Aaron for your contributions, really appreciated.

    Have you verified the application log / log-files for any possible root causes?

  • Seeing this error in the log file:

    [2010-04-06 10:38:52.019] APPVMANAGER 1044 2372 SW_SQLDataConnection::Open - - - - 2 41494 "Failed to establish a connection to the data source: (Server: (local), Database: Softgrid).
    "
    [2010-04-06 10:38:52.019] APPVMANAGER 1044 2372 SW_SQLOutputHandler::Open - - - - 1 44910 "Failed to connect to data source.
    "

    Not sure why it is saying server: (local) in the registry it has the correct name of the SQL server.

  • Hello,

    Local? Sounds like it should be localhost at minimum...

  • You should find a .UDL file in the Management Server install folder - open the properties of that file and you can use it to check your connection to the database.

  • Hi, to access the udl file on my vas server I have had to install the management service, when I try and access the udl file I get:

    Properties you entered cannot be saved because the Data Link file is inaccessible. Ensure the hard drive or network share is still available.

    I've never had these errors when installing on a physical box only installing on a virtual server.

    If I right click and go to connections there are no entries in there, I can add my database server and connect ok but when I close out it says an error occured.

  • Hello,

    Do you have write-access to the file?

    What is the server name of the SQL-server? Can you ping it using the name you specified ?

  • Hello, ok I've add my user account to access the udl file and I can now access the udl file fine and it keeps my settings. I still cannot start the app-v management service though.

    It is using the account Network Service. I can ping the SQL server, its name is JT29162VM.

  • Hello,

    Have you tested the connection by using the UDL-file?

  • Hi, yes logged in with my account the SftMgmt.udl file connects fine. In the event log I'm still seiing the error I reported earlier:

    I just don't get why it is saying server local when in the registry it has the correct name for the server holding the database.

  • Hello,

    What information does the .UDL file contain?

  • It contains the name of the server, and the database name. I can test connection succesfully.

  • At this point it may be quicker for you to remove and re-install the Management Server software; or perhaps even run up another server to see if you can replicate the issue.
