MMC could not create snap-in RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm running Windows 8 Pro x64 (patched through Nov updates released on 11-13-2012), and am unable to view some of my mmc snap-ins, specifically the event viewer (eventvwr.msc)

Error Msg: "MMC could not create the snap-in. The snap in might not have been installed correctly.
    CLSID: FX{b05566ad-fe9c-4363-be05-7a4cbb7cb510}

    Things I've tried

uninstalled and re-installed .net framework v3.5 (via programs and features)
unable to access event viewer from a remote computer (e.g. windows server 2003 with domain admin credentials).
installed/uninstalled the windows 2012 deployment toolkit - didn't help my situation so I uninstalled it.
disabled UAC - didn't help either.

I'm at a loss here. If someone can provide some assistance, it would be appreciated.

    Regards,

    Marty

  • Hi,

According to your description, I suggest to perform these steps to troubleshoot the issue:

    1 Run sfc /scannow

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833

    2 Run regsvr32 C:\Windows\System32\msxml3.dll

3 Create another administrator account and login to see if the same issue occurs

If the issue persists, you can try to use system refresh for test:

    Enter the Start screen
    Click Control Panel
Click General on the left column
Under the Refresh your PC without affecting your files, click Get started

  • Issue also occurs after installing RSAT - mmc for WSUS doesn't work either. Error messages are similar, but different CLSID's.

  • Leo - Thanks.

    #1 - failed.

    #2 - failed.

    #3 - failed.

The system refresh did the trick (though, had a fair amount of work to do after - appreciate your help.

  • Hello,

After upgrading my Windows 7 to Windows 8. I had the same problem
After trying all the steps above, except the systemrefresh, and also  reverted the machine.config files to machine.config.default in C: \ windows \ Microsoft.NET
I finally found the solution for me.

I have removed the [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ MMC \ SnapIns \ FX: {b05566ad-fe9c-4363-BE05-7a4cbb7cb510} key (after exporting it).

then the event viewer finally started working again.

    Sincerely,

    Tom
