Why can't I use my personal email to sign up for a Microsoft account?

I have a personal email address (me@stuff.me, for example) which I would like to use for my Microsoft account. When I try to do this I get errors similar to:
"You can't use @stuff.me in your Microsoft account email address. Please try a different email address."
depending on which site I'm trying to do this on (xbox.com, microsoft.com, etc.). Normally I really wouldn't have a problem with Microsoft doing it's own thing, but if I'm supposed to use this account on my personal computer now (with Windows 8 just over the horizon), why am I not allowed to use the email that I want to use?
The better question is, how do I get around this? I've noticed restrictions and questions are different depending on which Microsoft site you try to create your account on. Is there a way to make an account using my personal email? Or a way to make my personal email the primary one after creating the account?
Thanks
(Before anyone asks, I'm using a gmail account to post this.)- Changed type Arthur Xie Wednesday, October 17, 2012 10:01 AM

Have you registered your account on Passport.net?

Go to this address:
https://accountservices.passport.net/ppnetworkhome.srf?vv=1350&mkt=EN-GB&lc=2057
And scroll down to
"Use an email address you already have" and follow "Use an email address you already have"
You will then have a live account. You can use this as you login to Windows 8, also, which will give you full functionality in the metro apps.

When I follow that link, I get redirected to account.live.net with the account I have under a gmail address. I'm looking to change the email connected to that account to a personal address instead of a gmail/hotmail/livemail account.

use a live.com, or hotmail.com account and then using Live Essentials Mail you can use all of you email accounts conveniently

I think this was one of the sites I tried originally. When I try to use my email account to set up a Live account, I get the error:
"We're sorry, but accounts ending in @stuff.me are issued and managed by the domain owner.
To create a Microsoft account, please use a different email address. If you don't have one, you can get a free Windows Live Mail account."I don't understand why I'm prevented from creating an account using a domain that I own? And how do I get around this, or make that email primary after creating an account (which I have tried as well and get a similar error).

I'm trying to create a Microsoft account for my mom using her existing email because she just got a Windows 8 tablet. When I try to sign up for a new account, it tells me that the email is already in use. When I try to request the password, we get an error that says "The Microsoft account is incorrect. Please try again." How can the account name be incorrect and already in use? That makes no sense.Wednesday, December 12, 2012 4:39 AM
