Outlook 2016 on Terminal Server, Windows Search Disabled RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm trying to understand how Outlook 2016 works with Exchange 2016 in an environment with windows search service disabled.

My server has the windows search service disabled.

Outlook clients immediately get a prompt when searching saying:

Windows Search Engine is currently disabled. Outlook will not be able to provide fast search results using Instant search functionality unless this service is running.

I thought an online mode outlook client searched against the exchange server?

  • Hi George,

When running in Online Exchange mode, Windows Search cannot crawl and index e-mails locally. All searching are performed based on the Exchange index. However, Windows Search attempts to help you reduce the burden on Exchange while keeping the index current. This should be why you see this prompt. See the following article for more details:

    Windows Search 4.0 Administrator's Guide

    Hope this helps.
