  • Step one:  if you have any USB devices connected, save for keyboard and mouse, disconnect them.  This includes (with stress added) any memory card readers (if it's internal, open up the case, and unplug it.)

Step two:  run Memtest86+ on the system for a while (the floppy version is easier to create a disc with; however, if you don't have a floppy drive, you'll need the ISO version (disc image) to create a bootable CD.)

Step three (only if the HDD and/or DVD drive are IDE):  Verify proper placement and jumpering of the drives - Master goes on the end of the cable, Slave goes in the middle.  The 'long' end of the IDE cable goes to the mobo; 'short' end goes to the master drive.  Note also that drive jumering arrangements do sometimes have a different setting for 'master (no slave)' vs. 'master (slave present.)'

Step four:  if this is a downloaded (eval) version, try re-burning the disc at a lower speed.

Step five:  Try replacing the DVD drive with one from another computer.  The new installer that's part of Vista (and Server 2008, and Windows Home Server) is a bit less tolerant of disc-read errors than XP was.
