Unable to Start DPM service DPM 2010 RRS feed

  • Question

  • We had an issue that some of the backup jobs weren't running. There were some SQL errors on the server and I was unable to connect to the database using the SQL Management Studio. I decided to restart the server. Now the DPM service wont start. When I try to start it I get the error below. Any suggestions?

Unable to find local SQL server:

  • If you are unable to connect to SQL Instance, the DPM service won't be able to either.

I know it isn't very helpful, but resolve the SQL connectivity issue and then (re)start the DPM service on your DPM server.

Its kind of an egg before the chicken problem. The SQL Tasks are still there trying to run, but can't because the DPM service isn't running. The DPM service isn't running because it can't contact the SQL DB.

    Couple questions for further comments-

Is the SQL Server local, or remote?

What version of DPM? Looks like DPM 2010, but what version was it patched up to?

What version OS is DPM installed on?

Were you able to connect to the SQL instance after rebooting?

  • Hi Luz3r,

    Please do the following:

    1. Restart the DPM server
    2. If the SQL server is local please verify that the service is running
    3. Try to open the console, if it fails move on to step 4
    4. Open an elevated command prompt and run the DPMSYNC -SYNC command from the BIN catalouge of the DPM server installation
    5. Try to open the DPM console

  • We are running version 3.0.81193.0 and its DPM 2010. The SQL server is local and the host server is 2008 R2.

I was able to connect to the SQL server after restarting and start the DPM server about 3 hours after the reboot (first few times it didnt start). I'm still trying to figure out what happened.

I also just noticed that our data store went from 90% to 95% (about 2TB of data in a week) in use. Is there any way to track down when the new volumes, if any, were made and why?

  • I ran the DPMSYNC -SYNC command and now I can't start the DPM service. I found this KB for the error number and I tried restarting all the services but some of them arent even started and the get stuck. I was able to log in to the SQL server and the DbRecovery is "1".

In the event log I get a timeout error:

"A timeout was reached (30000 milliseconds) while waiting for the DPM service to connect."

    Starting DPM service error:

Update: Also get the error when I reran the DPMSync:

  • Hi Luz3r,

If you reboot the DPM server and verify that the SQL services are running, please redo the DPMSYNC -SYNC.

Please look at the local Windows Application and System logs and post any information regarding error populated during the time fram of the operation. Also verify the local DPM logs present in the tmp catalouge of the DPM server installation.

  • I ended up making a ticket with Microsoft. The rep said that it had to do with DPM not being able to connect to the internet. I'll watch the service for the next few days and see if it ends up getting stuck again.

    Thanks for the help.

  • Have you put some of your workload into Azure?

  • I've ended up with the same error. After I enabled Internet access to my DPM Server its service "automagically" started up. Thanks for saving me a ticket with M$
