ShellRunAs.exe and msc files RRS feed

  • Question

  • not sure what the best forum was to post this, i have this issue:

Im trying to use ShellRunAs.exe to run application under my Admin account with smartcard.

This works for most applications, but not for the Domain admin tools like Active Directory Users and computers.
    I have tried  various command:
    C:\Path\to\shellrunas.exe C:\windows\system32\dsa.msc
this results in a popup from ShellRunAs:
    Error launching program:
The system cannot find the file specified
    C:\Path\to\shellrunas.exe  c:\windows\system32\mmc.exe c:\windows\system32\dsa.msc
This results in a run as dialog as expected, once i authenticate under a different user i get:
    Error launching application:
    the requested operation requires elevation.
How can i get this to work, without changing any group policies, i just want this to work like other programs.

    Im using Windows 8 x64

also posted this on the sysinternals forum, but that seems pretty dead

    Hope someone knows.

  • Hi,

The mmc.exe needs the elevation, and shellrunas (the same as Runas) doesn’t start it elevated even from an elevated command prompt.
