HyperVPagefileExclusions not working RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have DPM 2012 R2 running on server 2012 R2. Dpm backup vms through Hyper-V host. Some of the vms have this additional vhd drive with name "_DoNotBackup.vhd". Used this command Set-DPMGlobalProperty -DPMServerName dpmServer-HyperVPagefileExclusions "_DoNotBackup.vhd"  few days ago. Backup occurs very night. Today I restored one of the vm which has "_DoNotBackup.vhd" and found it has latest data which means HyperVPagefileExclusions not working.

    Any clue?

  • Hi,

Are you certain the file has .vhd and not .vhdx extension ?

Try using wildcard to include both .vhd and.vhdx.

       Set-DPMGlobalProperty -DPMServerName (&hostname) -HyperVPagefileExclusions "*DoNotBackup.vhd*"

    The check the setting using:

      Get-DPMGlobalProperty –PropertyName -dpmservername (&hostname) HyperVPagefileExclusions

  • While troubleshooting I found that "HyperVPagefileExclusions" is not working for where HyperV host are running Server 2012 R2 OS.  "HyperVPagefileExclusions" is working fine where HyperV host running Server 2012 OS. So it looks like bug on Server 2012 R2.

  • We have a similar issue with DPM 2012 R2. It still seems to be writing the excluded VHD to the replica. Here's the exclusion:

    PS C:\Windows\system32> Get-DPMGlobalProperty -Property HyperVPagefileExclusions
    *_TEMP.vhd*

The disks are in the format <server_name>_TEMP.vhd or <server_name>_TEMP.vhd

    Any ideas? Thanks,

    Marcus

  • Hi,

The DPM PageFile exclusion feature will still perform initial replication for the excluded .vhd since it is part of the VM's configuration and is required for restore. However DPM should no longer track block level changes and bring them over during a recovery point for that .vhd and therefore save space in the recovery point volume over time.

  • Well, that is not the case if you use Microsoft Server 2012 R2 as your Hyper-V OS. If have the same problem as Marcus and yashmitl.

In addition I can confirm that if you use Server 2012 as Hyper-V OS the SCDPM Hyper-V Page File Exclusions work.

Also with SCDPM UR5 this problem with Server 2012 R2 as Hyper-V OS still exists. Do you have any workarounds?

    Regards,

  • Does anybody have any idea if MS will ever make the various Update Rollups available for Microsoft Azure Backup?  This is an "adjusted" version of DPM Server available to those using Azure Backups and it does completely different licensing, but MS doesn't seem to make ANY Update Rollups available for Microsoft Azure Backup.

  • Hi,

There is a Microsoft Azure Backup Server (MABS) update rollup that should contain the same fix.  This MABS update rollup is equivalent to DPM UR11.

KB3175529-Update 1 for Microsoft Azure Backup Server
