unmountable boot volume error RRS feed

  • Question

  • I got this message a few weeks ago. In reading online sounds like my hard drive crashed. Is that correct? I really need to get the pictures off the computer. Is this doable? And, should I just get a new hard drive or invest in a new computer? Ours was purchased in 2005.

I would try connecting the drive up to a different computer as a slave and see if you can get at the files that way.  Your hard drive is probably on the way to that big Computer in the Sky.  Probably not a bad time to start looking at new machines.

  • Hi Tema,

This is an error consistent with a hard drive corruption issue. It may be advisable to look at replacing the hard drive itself if you get it back up and running.

    Try the following:

    1. Insert your XP installation disc into the CD and boot up your computer.

    2. Press F12 during boot to select CD drive as boot device

    3. When you see a welcome screen, hit the R key on your keyboard. This will enter you into recovery mode with a DOS prompt.
    4. Now type chkdsk C /f /r and hit Enter (Assuming your installation is on C drive, if not sub in the correct drive letter for C). This will launch a utility which will check for errors on your hard drive.
    5. After the process is done, type fixboot and hit Enter to repair any damaged boot files which may have become corrupted. When asked to say yes or no, type the Y key on your keyboard.
    6. Type exit and press the Enter key to reboot your computer.

    7. Immediately remove the XP CD when you hit enter to reboot.

    Best of luck

    M
