shadow copy RRS feed

  • Question

  • I see there is a lot of shadow copy when I run vssadmin list shadows. It seems that a shadow copies created very hour. This creates problem for me because it is a exchange server and shadow copy on database drive will freeze the db temporally. It also almost used up all free space on the drive. I check everywhere I know trying to disable this behavior but I can't find it. There server is win2012R2. Can anyone help to point out where to disable the shadowcopy running? Also I have Backupexec agents installed on the server. But there is no backup job setup. I consulted with Veritas and they said it's not their software causing it. I disabled the Backupexec agents and the shadow copy still creates. So it's not Backupexec causing the issue.

    Thanks

    Alan

Answers

  • Have you ever observed when these shadow copies were created? Do they appear regularly? Can you upload a screenshot of VSSadmin list shadows?

    Thanks,

    Daniel

  • Hi Alan,

First you need to stop the Shadow Copy Service:

    1. Click on Start, type services and press enter.

    2. Locate the service "Volume Shadow Copy" and right click and click "Stop".

    3. Close Services windows.

After that you need to disable shadow copies for the volume:

  • Hi,

1.Please try to disable "volume shadow copy " service.

2.Please run "vsadmin list providers" to see if there is any other provider try to create shaodw copy.

3.You can also change the disk space for stored your shadow copies.

    Run the following command:

vssadmin add shadowstorage /for=<drive being backed up> /on=<drive to store the shadow copy> /maxsize=<percentage of disk space to allow to be used>
    For Example:
If the VSS shadow copies of the D: drive will be stored on the C: drive and allowed to use up to 90% of the free disk space on C:, the command would look like:

    vssadmin add shadowstorage /for=d: /on=c: /maxsize=90%

Hope this can help you, please let me know if you have anything unclear.

    Best Regards,

    Daniel

  • Thanks all for the help. Is this shadow service running by default? I don't think I had this issue before. I checked the shadow copy setting on the drives and shadow copy is disabled on all of them. Why does the shadow copy still run on them?

Also would disabling shadow service cause any issue? Later on I need run Backupexec on the server. It seems that it need shadow service to run in order to run backup of exchange.

  • Hi Alan,

It is no problem that the service is running. We needed to shut the service down otherwise you can disable the shadow copy feature.

You are correct that your backup software needs this service to backup exchange.

    Niels

  • 1.You should check if there is any other vss providers try to create shadow copies.

2.If you disable vss in service, you cannot run any backup tool normally.

    Best Regards,

    Daniel

  • I have below shadow provider. I have set volume shadow copy service and Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider to manual. But I still see this shadow copy created. What could be wrong?

  • My concern is not that changing storage size or location. I need stop this VSS snapshot. I don't want it. How and where to check to stop it? I already checked everywhere I know of. But it keeps showing up.

  • Never mind. I opened a paid ticket with MS. Hopefully it would be resolved.
