word 2003 Heading List Number doesn't go beyond 6 levels RRS feed

  • Question

  • Word 2003 (11.8326.8324 SP3) on an XP platform.

I've tried to Google & Bing a question without success and don't know where else to look.

I am typing an appendix heading entry and trying to get a heading number to go beyond the 5th level (A. When I get to the 6th level all of the following occur:

    • I can not set the start number in style (Modify > numbering > customize > Start at).
    • When I attempt to use the style preceding and following headings are altered. For example. A.1.2.3 becomes A.1.3 etc.
    • When I attempt to use the style, the current heading level resets to the 4th level and indents.
    • I can not use any heading level beyond the 5th (6th, 7th, etc.)

Is there any patch for this? Is there any workaround using a style or do I have to type in the entry using the 'Normal" style and forgo having it inserted in the Table of Contents?
