HTTP status code '413 (0x19D)' with text 'Request Entity Too Large' - During Windows Update Scan RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have been observing these warnings on couple of 2012 R2 & few 2016 servers when we scan for windows update against MS.

    When you scan from wuapp.exe

2018-08-25 08:19:52:563 1640 97d8 PT WARNING: Sync of Drivers failed (Software succeeded): 0x80240439

    When you scan using PS

MS wuapp API reference says that result code 3 means that it succeeded with error.

    $updatesearcher.Search("IsInstalled=0 AND Type='Software'") | fl

    ResultCode : 3
    RootCategories : System.__ComObject
    Updates : System.__ComObject
    Warnings : System.__ComObject

     * Can anyone suggest on how to fix these warning ?

     * Does this mean these servers will miss some updates by any chance ?

     * Look at the last warning message, it says "Sync of Drivers failed (Software succeeded): 0x80240439" But I am not looking for drivers update, I am looking for software updates.

  • Hi,

We can try to increase uploadReadAheadSize on the IIS WSUS administration node from 49152 to 491521.

After launching "Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager", go to sites> WSUS Administration> management> Configuration Editor> uploadReadAheadSize

Hope my answer could help you and look forward to you feedback.

    Best regards,
    Johnson

  • I am sorry, but how does it going to help in this case. This is happening while scanning https://fe2.update.microsoft.com/v6/ClientWebService/client.asmx MicroSoft site.

    Am I missing anything ?

  • Hi,

To avoid any misunderstanding, I want to confirm that you scan the updates from Microsoft or WSUS.

If from Microsoft, you may have the problem in client computer itself.

If from the WSUS, then you should increase uploadReadAheadSize for requesting too large entity during update scanning.

There is a similar issue of others that you can refer to:

  • Thanks for replying. I get these warning when I scan both WSUS & Miscrosoft.

I am pretty sure that it is a problem on client computer, but I am unable to isolate this issue. I tried repairing windows update agent, cleared cache & tried renaming C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution, restarting the related services did not seem to help.

I have been trying to decode the soap action which is getting posted against WSUS/MS, all I see is the large HTTP request which is getting rejected by the server.
