Upgrade WSE 2012 from R1 to R2 "in-place"? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Is it possibel to do a "in-place" upgrade from Windows Server 2012 Essentials to Server 2012 R2 Essentials?

My problem is, that I only have one server at home (WSE is my WHS replacement) and I would like to keep my domain and users, but if I need to delete the old server before I can install the new one, because it is the same hardware I would need to recreate the domain...

  • Unfortunately it is not possible. You would have to do a migration from the r1 to r2 version which requires 2 machines, or if you can a VM or 2

Here is the Technet article on the process

Personally I am considering a complete network rebuild for this.  Since it is my home network not such a big deal

  • So much for partners and the note we have 12 months to move to r2. Guess we just rework the whole damn thing. Pathetic. Should have figured out an in place update for ALL products. This is weak. MOnths of work thrown under the bus..
