  • No need, DPM only uses storage as required.

  • Hi,

Christian is correct, the replica volume is now a .vhdx file and as more data is protected the .vhdx file will grow if necessary.  When files are deleted from the protected server, the files are deleted in the .vhdx file and trimmed.  So basically the space used by the replica will vary as the protected data size varies.  The need for shrinking is eliminated when using modern backup storage.  However ReFs clones of the replica .vhdx file are used for recovery points which still has pointers to the blocks representing the deleted files.  Those blocks will not be freed until all recovery points containing those files are deleted and dereferenced by ReFs.

More information about Windows 2016 ReFs Block cloning can be found on technet here: Block Cloning
