"Data Refresh failed" when refreshing EWA web part after setting up SSO RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello Guys,

I am trying to use Excel services in Moss 2007. MOSS 2007 environment conists of 1 app server (central admin/search) 2 wfe servers build on domain A and SQL Server 2005 Data base server on Domain B. And it has one way trust. Domain A users can authenticate against Domain B.

The enviornment is trusted subsystem model for Excel services.

I have setup SSO succesfully. And I have created SSO ApplicationID and the required steps against the Database that resides in Domain B. Created odc data connection file in  Excel using the SSO ID(with all 3 refreshing checkboxes enabled in the odc connection)and exported to SharePoint DC library and the library is trusted in SSP Excel services.  I create the Excel workbook using the odc file exported to SharePoint DC and saved the excel work book in SharePoint library (this library also trusted in SSP Excel services).

Now I have configured the workbook in Excel web access web part, when I refresh I have the below error..

                    Data Refresh Failed
Unable to retrieve external data for the following connections

                   ExcelSSOuser

The data sources may be unreachable, may not be responding, or may have denied you access.

Verify that data refresh is enabled for the trusted file location and that the workbook data authentication

                  is  correctly set.

How do I ensure a secure and valid refresh operation?

And below are the diagnostic logfiles

I have also run the below stsadm

    stsadm.exe -o Set-EcsSecurity -Ssp <SSP name> -AllowCrossDomainAccess true|false

Interestingly I can use and retrive the data in SharePoint designer using the same SSOID.

    Appreciate your help and thoughts.

  • Hi,

According to your description, in my opinion, I suggest that you should connect to the SPS site as local administrator. You have downloaded the Excel file on your desktop and using the same connection to works fine.
The problem comes from the Trusted File Location/Trusted Data Connection Libraries I guess, but I couldn't find what's wrong in my configuration.
In Trusted Data Connection Libraries you have added the URL of the Document library where the ODC connection file is.
In Trusted File Location you have added the root URL with :
    - Location Type : Windows SharePoint Services
    - Trust Children: true
    - Workbook Calculation mode: File
    - Allow External Data: Trusted data connection libraries and embedded
    Please have a try.

    Best regards
    David Hu

  • Thanks Pratik for the link. The above link is for Kerberos delegation and SSAS.

In my case it is Trusted subsystem model and the data is simple SQL server table data.
