MOSS 2007 Single Server Installation recommendation RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

One of my customer having Single Server topology for their PRODUCTION environment. Though there is no performance issue, the scheduled crawling service is not running.

Please suggest whether the Single Server is acceptable. Is there any Microsoft guidelines for small server farm? Thanks in advance.

    Regards
    Sanra

  • Hi,

As per Microsoft SharePoint 2007 Companion book "Single-server roles are best suited for environments with a small user base or for testing labs ".

Microsoft White paper says "A standalone installation may be more appropriate if you want to evaluate SharePoint Products and Technologies or if you require a small, non-business critical deployment where high availability is not essential ".

Is there any deciding criteria or specific limits where by we need to go with Multi Server environment than Single Server topology?

For E.g The Single Server supports up to 50 users etc.

    Any other suggestions?

    Regards
    Sanra

  • Hi Sanra,

Again I would like to suggest the same thing, you can extend your farm as per your requirement.

It is quite difficult to say how many number of users are supported in small server farm, but definitely its more then 50.

    You can refer -

  • While single server is acceptable, the main costs in a MOSS installation are the cost of MOSS itself and the costs of the CALs for every single user that can access the MOSS "farm". (Std or Std+Enterprise depending which version of MOSS is used).

These charges remain the same even if a single server installation is used (as compared to an installation with the SQL Server part located on a second server).

So from a cost/benefit point of view, I would always consider that single server for MOSS is always the wrong choice and that at the very least the basic two server farm should be used.

(Three servers - WFE, MOSS; SQL Server - require a second MOSS cost but do not increase the CALs cost either)

  • Hi Mike,

That was understandable..but will crawling be affected if we use single server? I heard in some places there is no issue on crawling in small farms if they use three servers, one for WFE, one for MOSS and one for SQL Server. Can u please throw some light on this based on Crawling issue?

Is the Crawling failing because both MOSS and SQL are in the same server?
