A Quick Question about Licensing RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello Everyone

I'm going to be installing Server 2012 R2 onto a new server next week and I  intend to have 2 VM's running. One being Server 2008 R2 and another 2012 R2. Can I use the same product key for 2012 R2 on my virtual machine that is used on the host machine? Or do I need to purchase 2 copies of Server 2012 R2? Many thanks in advance.

  • Hi, you have a very easy confuguration here.

Practically: If your Windows Server 2012 R2 edition is standard, you have the right to run 2 virtual machines (WS 2012 R2 or downgraded version) (VOS) without additional licences (if you have one or two processors on your physical host). So on your case, you can have your 2 VMs with no need to any other licence.
