"Error exporting module file" when saving site as tempate

    Question

  • When saving a site as a template, I get the following error:

    Error exporting module file: 3SharedDocuments/403PROJECTDOCUMENTATION/14Manuals-OandMManuals/15ImpactStandardManualsTemplate/19StdContentsItem10-ServiceContactDetails.doc

This error repeats if the file is removed, it just reports problems with another file until all files are removed.

Googling this error returns all of one reference which is not applicable.

    Has anybody encountered this issue?

    Many thanks

  • Hi.

If you save the site as template without content, does it work then?

I see that you have an impressive URL just to the files...could that be the problem? Only this part after the file: has 141 characters in it.

    Hope this helps some.

  • Hi Appollyon,

Could this be due to URL / filename / path size restrictions.

Please check this article for reference:

  • Thanks for the quick responses.

I have reduced the file path size to below 128 characters and get the same errors.

Yes, when saving as a template excluding content, the save works.

  • Please check the ULS log for an entry with ULS tag "8gy2". This should contain information about the exception that occurred which led to this error message.

  • Stefan

Thanks for the very specific response. I have found the line(s) you mention.

It shows the error which was thrown and indicates the savetmpl.aspx file used to create (or fail to create) the template.

Otherwise, tells me who the user was, category, correlation, etc., but nothing useful in terms of solving the issue. What should I be looking for?

  • Actually, hang on a second. I'm looking above and below that line for hints. Will report back shortly.

  • Looks like it is filename length. Depends on whether the path is inserted as a querystring after the allitems.aspx. Will ask the user to review filenaming.

    Thanks.

  • Can you please paste the whole ULS entry? The last part should contain the raw exception information.

Be aware that the ULS log entry might be split over more than one line.

  • Ok, thanks for this!

So this is a cascading exception. You should have an ULS log entry with one of the following tags before the other one in the ULS: "8h2i" or "g2c3"

But based on your previous post you already got an indication that hte problem is related to the Url format.
