Will deleting Project Workspaces reduce the size of content DB? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I am deleting project workspaces from PWA. I had a question that after deleting all the workspaces will the size of content DB be reduced? and how much the size of content DB would be reduced?

    Thanks

  • Hi,

You will see the size decrease depending on the content that is within the project workspaces you are deleting.

There are a couple of things you may want to consider in addition:

    • Do you have version history on in your workspace libraries? if so is it really needed?
    • Does your workspace template have extra libraries / lists etc that you don't really use any more, if so consider updating the template to remove
    • Will you need to access information in the templates you are proposing to delete? If so, you may need to consider backup and restore options.

Finally, you might want to check out the recycle bin, if you are using 2010 + Sp1 remember sites will get caught by the recycle bin and should be emptied before you will see a db decrease (after shrinking).

    Hope this is of use

  • Hi again,

Yes, you wil definitely reduce size if you are talking about thousands of project sites!

And I would say, if you don't need them, just delete them ;)

  • Hi Mr DBA,

Maybe you can find the answer by setting your DB setting (Autogrowth) to the minimum, beeing 1Megabyte.
Just create empty workspaces and you will see when the database (the DB file) gets bigger...

In case of deletion of workspaces, the freed amount of space depends on the size of what you are deletening... (of course ;)
But your database (again the DB file) will not shrink automatically: you have to use the "Shrink" command.

  • Thanks for your response :),

Yes, i know that i will have to shrink  the database after deleting the workspace. I was just trying to make sure that if we are using SharePoint only for MSPS the the content DB will keep only workspaces of the projects... and if we tried to delete the workspaces of all the projects (which are in thousands) , will it directly reduce the size of content db (after shrinking)??

    Thanks! :)
