2007 and UM with Asterisk RRS feed

  • Question

  • has anyone tried or does anyone think that an Asterisk based VoIP can interface with 2007?  Asterisk is so popular it would be huge for Exchange.

  • Exchange uses SIP/TCP. Asterisk uses SIP/UDP. They are not compatible. There is a flaky SIP/TCP for Asterisk out there somewhere, if you want to start recompiling Asterisk yourself. Otherwise, you will have to use a SIP Proxy between Asterisk and Exchange, ie. SER or SIPX. Instructions on getting Asterisk working, via SIPX, can be got from http://blog.lithiumblue.com/2007/04/accessing-exchange-2007-unified_29.html

  • Is it possible that Microsoft will change their strategy with UM. Not allowing SIP over UDP is a serious ommision if you ask me. Come on Microsoft, support Asterisk users. The bodge using SER or SIPX is just not reliable enough and has problems with Asterisk servers not on the local subnet, i.e. UM and SIPX still try and contact Asterisk via SIP/TCP.
