How to activate 120 day FREE Trial RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi there,

A few months ago I downloaded the 120 day free trial of Forefront Server Security to protect our Exchange Server 2007 against viruses and other nasties attached to emails.  I installed this on my SBS2008 and it has been working fine, identifying viruses that come into our Exchange Server and cleaning / removing them.

Note the software is actually called "Forefront Server Security" on my server.  This name appears at the top of the window when I double click the icon which is also called "Forefront Server Security".  When I run this software it asks me if I want to activate it or continue with the free trial. If I click activate I am prompted to enter a 5 part license number.  The following text also appears:-

"To Activate the Forefront Server Security enter a product key then click OK""

I know this product must be purchased under Microsoft's Volume Licensing Agreement.  This is where the problems and confusion start.

    1) The re-seller I found sold me a 20 user license for Forefront Client Security. I went to the Microsoft Volume Licensing website to get my product key but none was shown. When I rang Microsoft to ask how to get the key they said there is no key.  They said I need to download the product from the downloads section on the Microsoft Volume Licensing website.  I have had a look and there are two links to download the software. One for Forefront Client Security and one for Forefront Client Security with SQL Server.

Question 1: What is the difference between Forefront Client Security and Forefront Server Security?

Question 2: Do I need Forefront Client Security or Forefront Client Security with SQL Server?

    2) Ive been told the only way I can use this product is to completely un-install the fully working version that I have on my server and install the one from the Volume Licensing website again from scratch.  Apparently this one wont ask to be activated.

Question: Why does the 120 day trial of Forefront Server Security ask for a product key each time I run it if no product key is available?

I'm just after some advice about which product I should be using, and why I cant activate the one that I'm happy with thats already working fine on my SBS2008 protecting my Exchange Server 2007.

Any help or advice greatly appreciated.

    Rgds - David

  • Hi,

1# Forefront Client Security is the Client antivirus of Microsoft that protects business desktops, laptops, and server operating systems from virus, spywares and other classic malwares ... http://www.microsoft.com/forefront/clientsecurity/en/us/product-documentation.aspx . Forefront Server Security products are a set of solutions (Forefront for Exchange, Forefront for Sharepoint, Forefont For OCS) to protect specific data as Exchange database, Sharepoint content, ... and a non classic malware as spam, worm, ... http://www.microsoft.com/forefront/serversecurity/en/us/default.aspx

2# If you have not SQL you need purchase FCS with SQL to get the possibility to use reports, management console ... For more details, have a look at this link http://www.microsoft.com/Forefront/clientsecurity/en/us/pricing-licensing.aspx

    3# From this link http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb795077.aspx

"Microsoft provides a fully functional version of Forefront Security for Exchange Server for a 120-day evaluation. If you have a product key and enter it during installation, the product becomes a fully licensed subscription version. If not, it remains an evaluation version.

After 120 days, the evaluation version of FSE continues to operate and report detected files. It does, however, cease to clean, delete, and purge files (that is, the action for all virus detection is reset to Skip: detect only). All filters (file, content, and keyword) also have their actions set to Skip: detect only. Finally, the Allowed Sender lists are disabled and scan engines no longer update.

To subsequently convert an evaluation version to a subscription version, enter a product key using the Forefront Server Security Administrator, by selecting Register Forefront Server from the Help menu."
