Reimaged Machine - Can I Look Up the Activation Key on the Recovery Disc? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have reimaged a machine with a backup Windows 7 install.  I need to activate it and I have the recovery disc, but it was not reimaged with the recovery disc.  Can I extract the license number from one of the discs or do I need to reimage it all over again?  This is my first HP Reimage.  Thanks.

Answers

  • The key is not included on the recovery disk.  It should be on a sticker on the bottom of the computer (perhaps in the battery compartment)

    Care to be more specific?

  • In addition, we could also find the key by the following link:

  • Turns out that even though I did retrieve the original key, this was an OEM license, which requires a digitally stored key from an HP Recovery Disc.  I was able to only activate Windows after I reimaged the machine again - with the OEM discs.
