  • First method question. Have you turned off any anti virus software? by definition this software is designed to prevent any changes to your operating system. Sp3 is a major change to the operating system.

Are you able to boot into safe mode? {Pressing F8 key} before windows splash key?

Most things are not loaded in this mode. And does not require fiddling with administrator mode. Xp is different then most. Administrator mode is not descriptive of what is happening inside the OS. See Mark Russinovicks posting about administrator mode.

Attempt to install Sp3 from safe mode will bypass most problems. Most things that inhibit the installer are not loaded here.

And please back up your installation before making any changes.

There are forums about integrating post SP3 fixes and creating your own installer disk. But not worth more then just mentioning here.Other then booting from a DVD OEM Sp3 is quicker and results in more reliable installations.

If anything here works for you. Please mark this as answered
