smtp;400 4.4.7 Message delayed while rebooting Hub Transport server 2007 ? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

Can anyone please suggest me some way to shorten the email delay duration when patching or rebooting the IGMP multicast cluster Hub Transport server + CAS role (Exchange Server 2007) ?

some of my clients got Delivery is delayed to these recipients or distribution lists

email reply when sending email to my organization (smtp;400 4.4.7 Message delayed).

FYI: The next hop after the Hub transport + CAS is a UNIX Solaris box running sendmail acting as the email gateway to the Symantec MessageLabs.

  • Hello Albert,

It would be appreciated if you can help in clarifying the following:

    1. How many HUB/CAS servers do you have?
    2. Are they load balanced?
    3. Do you patch or restart them at the same time?

    Thanks,

  • Bruce,

    Thanks for the reply

I've got 2x HUB&CAS server roles in the production site set as NLB - IGMP multicast cluster.

and 1x HUB&CAS server roles in DR stand alone.

What I did is that I apply the SP3 sequentially one CAS&HUB server at the time then reboot it once it is done, but somehow the email delivery got delayed ?

  • Hello Albert,

In normal circumstance, when one of your HUB&CAS servers is restarting, the other one will take over all the load as they are set as NLB. Can you please briefly describe the inbound and outbound mail flow of your environment? Such like:

    Inbound:
    a mail -> UNIX Solaris box -> NLB - IGMP multicast cluster -> HUB&CAS servers -> mailbox

Also, please do the test below to narrow down the issue.

    1. Schedule a maintenance window to shutdown of your HUB&CAS servers in the production site.
    2. Send several text emails.
    3. Check if the emails remain in the queue on the other working HUB&CAS servers.

The result would help us identity whether the emails are delayed on the Exchange side or somewhere else.

    Thanks,

  • Bruce, thanks for the reply. Yes the configuration is right like you stated below:

    Email -> Symantec.cloud / MessageLabs -> UNIX Solaris box -> NLB - IGMP multicast cluster  2x HUB&CAS servers -> Exchange mailbox server.

when I reboot only one of the server the email suddenly got delayed incoming from Gmail test?

  • Hi Albert,

Yes, we can do the test from Gmail.

  • Yes, that was the error message that I received from the Exchange Server when doing the testing from GMail.

Delivery is delayed to these recipients or distribution lists smtp;400 4.4.7 Message delayed

  • Hello Albert,

With one of your HUB&CAS server offline, after sending some emails, are they queued on the other HUB&CAS server in your production site?

    Thanks,

  • Hi Albert,

    1. Please post the message header of a delayed message here.
    2. Will you receive DSN if restarting the other HUB&CAS server?
    3. Please check message tracking log, see whether inbound mailflow is actually load balanced between your two Hub servers.
    4. Check if you can ping the NLB's virtual IP while restarting a Hub server.

    Thanks,

  • Hi Bruce, I won't be able to test it again since the upgrade has finished. So what's the suggested plan for avoiding this type of situation ?

  • Hi Albert,

Frankly, I don't have a clue why the issue happened since we haven't narrow down the problem. What I can suggest is to upgrade the servers during non-peaking hours.

    Thanks,

    Bruce R.
