Outlook 2010 message "failed to update headers"

  • I am running Outlook 2010 for an IMAP account under Windows 7 ultimate, and have just migrated from Outlook 2003, also IMAP, under Win/XP/SP3. Account includes emails, calendar, tasks and notes. The problem is with processing task reminders in right hand panel in OL2010..

The tasks were all set up some time ago in OL2003, and when complete were deleted or marked as complete. For recurring tasks of course, this results in a new task being generated on the correct date. As part of migration to 2010, I attached the 2003 PST file containing the tasks to the 2010 account, and then tried to process all the tasks within OL2010. As I expected, those which I had not deleted all initially showed up as overdue, but when I tried to delete them or mark them as complete, either singly or several at a time, I get the error message "failed to update headers".

Checking technet, I found a suggestion to run scanpst.exe. I did so (using the office 14 version of scanpst) and it found some errors in the tasks pst file and corrected them. But when I restarted OL2010 and tried again to process the outstanding tasks, the problem recurred.

Perhaps the way to resolve this is to COPY the relevant task folder from the OL2003 pst file to the corresponding OL2010 pst file, rather than allow 2010 to have direct access to a pst file originally created in OL2003? But contacts, calendar and notes have all migrated successfully by directly attaching the PST file to the 2010 account, and of course emails were migrated by IMAP, so it's a shame that tasks cannot move in the same way.

    Any ideas please?
