    I have Windows Vista Ultimate and am an administrator on my box. I was able to open Task Scheduler but the the Create Task and other items were greyed out and the library was unavailable with the 'Reading Data Failed' error.

    After spending a looong time on the phone with a very nice man from Microsoft support, the fix for this error has been given to me. It is to delete a particular registry key that was corrupted by a MS update. 

    Here is the fix that worked for me.
    Start > Run > regedit
    Navigate to HKLM\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\RPC\INTERNET 
    Export this key to back it up first, then delete the whole Internet key (and it's sub-keys). 
    Reboot your system
    Task Scheduler should now work.

    We are experiencing this same error on several Windows Vista systems on our Server 2003 domain. The things I have read point to some sort of issue with Group policy, but no resolution seems to be forthcoming from Microsoft. Anyone have any ideas? I have made sure all the dependent services are running. It seems like permissions are not being applied correctly.

    Disk defragmenter cannot start - Windows 7

    Same problem here- would like to run disk defrag soon please.

     

    Neither a file, nor subdirectory INTERNET exist after my RPC folder. Am I just misreading the instructions? Please help! I cannot find the key to remove

    This worked for me! I spent a lot of time reading all over the internet to no avail!

    You must run REGEDIT and look for the REGISTRY Key, not a folder on your hard drive.

    Still can't find a solution for this. Tried searching registry, guessin Windows 7 64 bit has different layout. Tried the solution on this forum http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/51193-task-scheduler-wont-start.html and still start does nothing. Just gives me error 1075. Any ideas??

    This worked for me on a Windows 7 Professional machine.  My problem was Task Scheduler would open but say that the Remote machine was not found.  Thanks for the tip.

    October 2010 VISTA sp2 32  I am having similar problems with my task scheduler.

    1. System configuration Task Scheduler properties greyed out, unable to change.
    2. Occassional Catastrophic Error on TS start, unable to read data.
    3. task error "account name" does not valid (software for that task uninstalled)
    4. Occassional "Reading Data Failed" error.
    5. the task image has been tampered with or corrupted mcupdate.  (which I thought whas media center, but may have been MacFee anti-virus which I had installed a long time ago and unistalled or something else).

    With regards to  HKLM\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\RPC\INTERNET  I could not find that specific key.

    Though I did find this.

    HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG\Software\Microsoft\windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings

    I don't think this is the right key, and i'm a little paranoid about changing my registry.  So any assistance and guidence would be appreciated.

    I know this is a pretty long bump, but I've been researching for days and I got to this solution in this thread.

    I'm having the same problem as the above poster, I cannot delete the "INTERNET" key, as there isn't one in HKLM\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\RPC.

    Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

    After a TON of research, I finally found a fix - I hope this works for anyone who reads this:

     

    Go to the command promt (Start > Type in CMD), then type "netsh winsock reset", then hit enter.

     

    Once it's completed, restart your computer, and viola! Fixed.

    Thx helped me out.

    There is a new virus which run strange downloads when FF or IE started. Solution: delete "tms.dll" in system32 then use "netsh winsock reset"

    It worked for Windows 2008 Server R2 cluster, 1 node went offline - Task Scheduler Critical RPC error. Removing of that key has completely fixed it. It appeared after security patching. THX

    Removal of that key is not an option for me... we limit RPC traffic through our firewall to a limited number of ports.  Any other suggestions?

    I have the same issue on windows 2008 server. I am in need to exclude specific ports. Removing the Internet key is not the solution for me.

    Any other suggestions. Tried "netsh winsock reset". still failed.

    After a TON of research, I finally found a fix - I hope this works for anyone who reads this:

    Go to the command promt (Start > Type in CMD), then type "netsh winsock reset", then hit enter.

    Once it's completed, restart your computer, and viola! Fixed.

    My error was slightly different, and was on Server 2008 R2, but this fixed it for me!  THANKS LAURIX!  Here's my exact error in hopes it'll help bring this thread to the top of a Google search for the next person who gets it.

    Thanks a ton for the fix.

    The registry delete followed by reboot worked for fixing the task scheduler.

    Servers affected were two Windows 2008 R2 SP1 servers. Also the Print Spooler service was also found not to start and the fix below was applied to fix it as well. http://michael.orlitzky.com/articles/server_2008_print_spooler_dies_with_error_0x80010057.php

    Hi,

    I faced the same issue today.

    What is the exact reason why this is failing? I need the configuration of RPC (specific range of dynamic ports) so I cannot delete the key.

    Worked Great

    Saved a 2008 sp2 server.  DNS and DHCP were all hosed up along with all the exchange services.

    Everything came right back

    I spent a lot of time hunting for a resolution to my issue. This worked on a similar issue with Win 8.1 after a Malware attack fragged key network files related to an MZA.dll attack.

    Thank you!  I tried every other solution (ie sfc /scannow, registry edits, starting in services) and nothing worked... this solution did... thank you!  On a side note, after the restart and attempting to defrag, I first received a message regarding disk defragmenter settings being controlled by another program... to my knowledge, nothing was controlling the defrag schedule, though this PC had a SEVERE malware infection (the reason it was in my hands in the first place).

    This fixed 3 separate issues I had on a Windows 2008R2 SP1 Server.

    One of them was a connecting application received a "Not enough resources to connect" message.  The other two were related to Windows Task Scheduler.

    After some digging found this fix "netsh winsowck reset" here and this solved the RPC initialization problem on Windows 10. All other strange things (RDP internal Error, Software Protection service,...) magically resolved after applying the fix and rebooting my machine.

    It was a lifesaver :)

    Hi,

    I am facing this problem with multiple computers, running windows 7 SP1 and all the latest updates.

    Windows update, task scheduler, netlogon are among the services that fail to start.

    DHCP also does not work.

    The task scheduler fails with RpcServerUseProtseq:ncacn_ip_tcp 1703 (that is RPC_S_PROTSEQ_NOT_SUPPORTED).

    HKLM\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\RPC\Internet does not exist and "netsh winsock reset" does not solve it either.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Rpc\ClientProtocols is present and contains the entries that are mentioned in https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/325930 (most importantly ncacn_ip_tcp).

    At this point I am out of ideas.

    Any ideas?
