Public Folder movement to Exchange 2010 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Team,

We are going to Transition Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010.

    Below is the sequence;

    1) Prepare AD and current Exchange 2003

    2) Install and Configure Exchange 2010

Here I will not change the Smarthost (Ironport) ocnfigured on Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010 RIGHT NOW.

    3) Public Folder movement from 2003 to 2010

After this stage Public Folder will be on Exchange 2010 and Mailboxes are still on Exchange 2003.

--> So I want to know that though all the users (Outlook 2003, 2007) are currently on Exchange 2003, they will be able to access this Public folders currently on Exchange 2010 wihtout any issues from their outlook?

--> Will it be OK, if after ALL Public Folders and ALL Mailboxes are moved from 2003 to 2010, I then configure SmartHost on 2010 Send Connector and disable it in Exchange2003?

I have come to know that there will be no disruption in mail flow eventhough after above point Smarthost is configured on Exchange 2003. Need to confirm please.

    Thanks,

    Mihir

  • Hi Mihir,

    It will work

    1. Just Add the Exchange 2010 server as Public Folder replica partner for the Exchange 2003 server Public Folder's.
    2. After confirming that all the Public Folder have been replicated to the Exchange 2010, you can move all replicas from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010. The "move all replicas" will actually remove the Exchange 2003 replicas.

    Thanks,

  • Hi Mihir,

Found an article for your reference:

Move Public Folder Content from One Public Folder Database to Another Public Folder Database

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb331970.aspx

To remove the public folder mailbox and stores, on the Exchange 2003 server, use ESM to perform the steps in the following article:

How to Remove the Last Legacy Exchange Server from an Organization

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb288905.aspx

In Exchange 2003, ESM prevents you from removing a public folder store until all the public folder replicas have completed their background move process.

Moving replicas can take several hours, or even days.

If we remove a public folder store before replication has completed, you could lose public folder data.

Before removing the last legacy server, please verify that you have created Exchange 2010 Send connectors to replace all outbound SMTP connectors that may exist on that Exchange 2003 server.

Also, verify that the Exchange 2003 server is not listed as the smart host for any Exchange 2010 Send connector or third-party SMTP gateway.

For more details, please see the articles above carefully.

    Hope it is helpful

    Thanks
