Server 2003 R2 mode DFS RRS feed

  • Question

  • Ok, so I have a domain that is at schema level 31 (Server 2003 R2) and will remain so for a while yet.  We want to implement DFS, so here is my question.
If install Server 2008 with DFS, will it run in Server 2003 R2 mode? Or will DFS installation fail because there aren't any Server 2008 Domain controllers and the domain is in Server 2003 mode?
For my current requirements 2003 R2 DFS is sufficient.

  • Yes, you can deploy Win2008 R2 DFS using the Win2003 R2 Schema.

Windows 2008 R2 - Before you can deploy DFS Replication, you must configure your servers as follows:

    • Extend (or update) the Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) schema to include Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2008, or Windows Server 2008 R2 schema additions. To use read-only replicated folders, the schema must include the Windows Server 2008 or newer schema additions. For information about extending the AD DS schema, see the Microsoft Web site at (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=93051).
