  • You'll want to run this from an elevated command prompt on Server 2008 / Server 2008 R2 as there is no right-click "Run as administrator" for MSP files.

  • You install it in production yet?  Any issues, any caveats?  Most importantly, does Windows Server Backup work the same and is unaffected?

  • My first attempt on a Server 2008 R2 CAS/HUB server resulted in a system reset (wtf?) during the "Creating native images for .NET assemblies" portion, so I'll be trying that again. That box has been a little finicky in general, so hopefully it wasn't something related. I don't use WSB so I can't comment.

  • Here is how it's gone so far for me.

1st box: CAS/HUB on 2008 R2, spontaneous reboot 1st time leaving services disabled, 2nd time worked but had to manually fix service startup settings. No restart requested.

    2nd box: CAS/HUB on 2008 R2, 1st time worked. No restart requested.

3rd box: CAS/HUB/MBX on 2008 SP2, spontaneous reboot 1st time leaving services disabled. 2nd time worked but had to manually fix service startup settings. No restart requested.

4th box: MBX on 2008 SP2, 1st time worked (Stopped the Ops Mgr service before installing)

5th box: MBX on 2008 SP2, 1st time worked (Stopped the Ops Mgr service before installing), Yes a restarted requested by the system.

  • My one lab system, UM/CAS/HUB/MBX on 2008 R2 had no problems during / after the update.  Since there are few folks running 2010 in the wild right now, any issues might not be discovered quickly.

  • My system appeared to get stuck at the "generating .net" part for about half an hour until I closed Microsoft Forefront client which started using high amounts of cpu during the install. It may have been coincidence, but there were no scheduled scans or anything happening. The instant I closed forefront it completed the update install.

  • Should this update be available via windows update? (It is not for me)

  • Thanks Brian,

I applied on my 2 Edge Transport and the only thing is that  it  did NOT start  Transport service after saying "complete", I have to  manually restart  this service .....

It did the same thing ( Transport service  did not restart after patch) on  DAG servers of  (HT/MX)  box, otherwise  everything works fine.

  • Probably not, they usually hit Microsoft Update a couple weeks after the normal download pages. It's better to snag it manually and install it that way anyways. :)

  • No problems during or after installation of Update Rollup 1.  Took about 18 minutes.  Even though a restart was not required, I restarted the system to check for problems. All Exchange services whose start type is Automatic were running after the restart.

Error and Warning events during the installation; the only ones that recurred on restart were Events 12025 and 12027, which were recurring on each restart before installing Update Rollup 1.

    2152, MSExchange ADAccess
    12025, MSExchangeTransport
    12027, MSExchangeTransport (14 instances)
    1007, MSExchange Mailbox Replication

  • It is unconceivable that Microsoft Exchange Server Group would release this rollup without specifying a very important requirement “ELEVATED RIGHTS” or for that matter not formatting the install to request elevation in the installation script. This is a case of major neglect that caused many hours to be wasted and that will translate in money and even jobs!
This is the only place I have seen this little tidbit of information which it is extremely important.
    VERY VERY VERY MAD!

I don't know if I'd go that far, I consider running any install from an elevated command prompt common practice these days with 2008 and 2008R2.

  • I am sorry but I forgot to mention that the update was performed by a Microsoft Support Engineer who demanded as a startpoint to run the rollup 1 update. This little trick shutdown the server for 6 hours until someone in US was able to take the escalated ticket.
Please look at the instructions listed under the download page:

I see the instructions, but personally I think there is no excuse today for an admin actively installing a program or update on any server with UAC enabled to not use run as administrator. That's just my $0.02, doesn't mean people have to agree.

Expecting that people will just know that it needs to be run under elevated credentials is absurd.  If a Microsoft engineer didn't know it needed to be, then how are is the average system administrator supposed to??  This information needs to be clearly presented on the rollup description page.  Not to mention that after we had this problem and subsequently re-ran the patch correctly, it introduced a number of other errors such as problems with our public folder database, replication, and causing the rpcclientaccess service to continually crash, effectively preventing all users from accessing outlook (these issues were corrected by uninstalling the rollup).

That is your opinion and you are welcome to have it. Just because someone works for Microsoft doesn't mean they are no longer human and have every answer to every issue. :)

  • what is so difficult, or why are you so opposed to a simple warning being placed on the information page?  what could it hurt?

  • Dear Brian,

Leeme first say thank you for helping us here for the Exchagne 2010 rollups roll outs, since we know that we all have seen some problems with Exchange roll ups back in Exchange 2007 days, but these useful information, can save our times to be proactive rather thant to be reactive...

WELL, I have a question here, that I have been told o install the Exchange 2010 Roll up 1 for BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5 compatibility on all the newly installed Exchange 2010 Servers:

    2 Nodes - HUB / CAS (Windows Server 2008 R2 EE)
2 Nodes - Mailbox DAG (Windows Server 2008 R2 EE)

SO the thing which I'd like to ask here that should I ONLY install Exchange 2010 Roll up 1 on all the above specified Exchange boxes, or install the Exchange 2010 Roll up 1 then install Rollup 2, or either I can directlyl go for Exchange Roll up 2 only.

I red on the Exchange Team Blog (http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2009/12/09/453485.aspx) for roll up 1, and I found that there are penalties of error(s) associated after the installation of Roll up 1 on Exchange Servers (HUB/CAS/MBX), so I was wondering that if anyone of you can tell me that which roll up sould I install on my Exchange 2010 Server(s) for having a safe side, as well as complete the prerequisities for BlackBerry Enterprise Sever 5.

    Thanks in advance

  • I have the same exact question. Did you ever get a satisfactory answer?? I had moved the majority of my mailbox while migrationg from EXC 2003 to EXC 2010. Our blackberry messaging through our BBES server was working fine and all of a sudden started to experience non transmission of emails to certain devices. We're having to do a fresh install of the BBES server. the one things Im am not certain of is whether the Update Rollup one was actually done. Is the some way to check to veryify that it was done.
