Outlook does not automatically update inbox when you add an additional mailbox to the profile - The folder was last updated on...

  • I'm having an issue where Outlook 2010 stops automatically updating the Inbox folder as soon as you add a particular Shared Mailbox to the account using the "Open these additonal mailboxes:" option.  We use Exchange 2007 SP3.

The symptoms are that after adding the new mailbox and downloading the mail, Outlook stops updating the Inbox on the main mailbox.  The Status bar shows "This folder was last updated on <datetime>" instead of "this folder is up to date."  If you hit Send and Recieve tab -> Update Folder Outlook will update the new mail, but you should not have to do that.

One workaround seems to be unchecking "Download Shared Folders" to stop caching the problem mailbox, but there are cases in which additional mailboxes need to be offline as well.

The error occurs on multiple machines, so it seems like something in the mailbox is causing this because it seems to affect only the one additional mailbox.  This mailbox is rather large (1.6 GB) and has over 500 subfolders, but not a ridiculous number of items (~15,000).  Before attempting to recreate this problem, I was using an additional mailbox MUCH larger than this attached to my own in the same method and was not experiencing the problem.

I left my computer on and connected overnight, and came in with my last message recieved at 3:34 PM (I had several in my inbox on other devices and OWA).  My Sync Issues log is littered with errors occuring all night long, it begins with the Limited Items error and then gives the "The client operation failed" error several times an hour.  Clearly this is an outlook issue, but I need to find a way to identify what is in the mailbox that is causing Outlook to behave this way.
