Database copies are not all showing up in EMC after SP1 upgrade RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have three exchange servers in a DAG -- one of them in a different site.  I followed the instructions in the TechNet article http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb629560.aspx, and upgraded the three servers.  Everything seems to work and I don't see any errors in the event log.  What I do see is that in the EMC, under Organization / Mailbox / Database Management, I only see one of the database copies listed.  Pre SP1, I saw three.  If I click properies on the database, it shows that all three servers are hosting copies of the database.

If I go to the shell on the active server, here's what I see

    [PS] C:\Windows\system32>Get-MailboxDatabase

    Name                           Server          Recovery        ReplicationType
    ----                           ------          --------        ---------------
Mailbox Database - Alpha       Apollo          False           Remote

    [PS] C:\Windows\system32>Get-MailboxDatabase | Get-MailboxDatabaseCopyStatus

Name                                          Status          CopyQueue ReplayQueue LastInspectedLogTime   ContentIndex
                                                                  Length    Length                             State
    ----                                          ------          --------- ----------- --------------------   ------------
    Mailbox Database - Alpha\Apollo               Mounted         0         0                                  Healthy
    Mailbox Database - Alpha\NY-EXCH-01           Healthy         0         0           9/1/2010 7:04:23 AM    Healthy
    Mailbox Database - Alpha\Ma-Exch-01           Healthy         0         0           9/1/2010 7:04:23 AM    Healthy

    [PS] C:\Windows\system32>

Everything appears ok there....so I guess I'm wondering why it doesn't show up in the EMC.  I have a screen shot of what I see here: http://novotny.org/files/exch2010sp1screenshot.png

  • Hi,

Restart Information Store Service and post the result on the forum.

  • No change.  Running the command line to get the copy status multiple times during the restart, I see this below and status changes for the content index as the service restarts....  appears normal.

  • Hi,

    How is the issue now?

Please try to lunch MMC and then add "Exchange Server 2010" snap-in and then check the issue again.

    Regards,

    Xiu

  • I added the snapin to MMC and have the same result.

I also tried removing one of the "missing" database copies using the shell, removing/renaming the database directory and then going to add a database copy using the EMC.  It successfully added the database copy and seeded but it still doesn't show up on the database copies list.

Something else that I'm sure is related -- If I go to the Server Configuration -> Mailbox, as I select each of the three servers, only one of them shows as having a database copy.  It must be wrong though as the EMS still shows three and I see the following informational event id for MSExchangeRepl from earlier this morning with all three copies appearing:

     Database redundancy health check passed.
Database copy: Mailbox Database - Alpha
    Redundancy count: 3

  • Oren,

I'm having the exact same issue as you.  Were you able to figure anything out about this?

If i view the management shell command log i also see a command that looks something like this:

    Get-MailboxDatabaseCopyStatus -Server 'SERVER' | Filter-PropertyEqualTo -Property 'ActiveCopy' -Value $true

If i run that command in powershell it generates the following error:

The term 'Filter-PropertyEqualTo' is not recognized as the name of a cmdlet, function, script file, or operable program
. Check the spelling of the name, or if a path was included, verify that the path is correct and try again.

  • I haven't checked the EMC log yet -- where is it?  I haven't heard anything yet or solved it....

    Wednesday, September 8, 2010 12:21 PM
  • Is there any issue with AD replication in the environment. Try doing a manual replication among DCs
    ------Exchange, OCS------
    Wednesday, September 8, 2010 12:34 PM
  • No AD issues -- all replication is normal via DFS-R.  No Exchange Replication errors either; it says everythign is healthy.  It appears to be an EMC issue.
    Wednesday, September 8, 2010 12:54 PM
  • If you right click where the database copies should be, you should be able to go to view and view the Exchange management shell command log.

Whats weird is it seems to be an EMC issue as the powershell reports everything correctly.

    Wednesday, September 8, 2010 1:56 PM
  • Install  EMC (only EMC ) on a separate box and see if you are able to see the databases.
    ------Exchange, OCS------
    Wednesday, September 8, 2010 2:00 PM
  • Nope, still doesn't show the database copies.  Just says "There are no items to show in this view".
    Wednesday, September 8, 2010 2:16 PM
  • Hi,

Please try the below method and let me know the result.

Delete the “Exchange Management Console” file from C:\Users\<currently_logged_in _username>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\MMC and launch EMC again.

    Regards,

    Xiu

  • Hi Xiu,

Thanks for the suggestion.  I gave it a try and still had the same result.  No database copies are present in the GUI.

    Thursday, September 9, 2010 2:28 AM
  • Xiu, I just tried that and I still get the same result.

    Thursday, September 9, 2010 10:02 PM
  • What version of the Exchange Mgmt tools did you install on the separate box?

    RTM or SP1?

  • SP1 the RTM version wont connect to a SP1 site.

  • I have exactly the same issue. Did anyone get this resolved. This is a 3 node dag across two locations. Powershell show all is well and testing also show this. Just the EMC only shows the database copies for  on e the 3 DAG nodes. I would appreciate a fix/help.

  • At some point, I would think a call to Microsoft is in order if you can't resolve this.

  • We also have this problem. Our DAG only has 2 nodes in the same subnet. 5 exchange servers, Edge, 2 CAS/HUB with NLB and 2 Mailbox servers with DAG. Upgraded to SP1 as described in documentation. Everything works fine, but EMC does not show databasecopies on Mailbox server with Activation preference 1 and mounted databases. "There are no items to show in this view". The server with healthy databases shows correctly.

I am struggeling to find a solution on this, so I would appreciate some help.

  • I have a support call open with Microsoft. I think they'll get back to me tommorow. I'll share any feedback.
    Tuesday, September 14, 2010 9:02 AM
  • I also have an open support call.  They've verified the EMC is getting valid data back, it just is not displaying that data.
    Tuesday, September 14, 2010 1:00 PM
  • I got a callback from MS Support. One path was that if there are netlogon errors (event id 5516) this could be related. But that's not the case. It's being escalated. Some more info about the issue can be found here: http://workinghardinit.wordpress.com/2010/09/13/emc-does-not-show-all-database-copies-after-upgrade-to-exchange-2010-sp1-still-investigating/ Also posting progress & updates.

  • Hi there,

To add to this thread, this also seems to be a problem with new installations of E2010 with SP1.  I have just configured two CAS / HT servers and 2 x DAG nodes.  2 Databases on each, both replicated to the other node.

Organization Configuration\Mailbox shows no database copies whatsoever in EMC.  Get-MailboxDatabaseCopyStatus in the Shell shows them up just fine.  Viewing the Command Shell Log for EMC, this tries to run the following:

    Get-MailboxDatabaseCopyStatus -Server 'SERVER_NAME' | Filter-PropertyEqualTo -Property 'ActiveCopy' -Value $true

which seems to render an error in EMS.

Server Configuration\Mailbox also shows no database copies whatsoever in EMC.

So, not just an upgrade to SP1 problem, also a new SP1 installation issue with EMC.

Any ideas or updates from the MS Calls?  I was about to log one myself.

    Thanks

  • I haven't heard anything on my case.  But i'm assuming they're coming up with some sort of fix for this. They should have collected enough info to determine the cause.

  • Mine is also still open. They are discussing it internally and are getting back to me. They have indeed seen it in several cases. You're the first I hear having this issue with a brand new SP1 roll out. Do you mind telling me the number of CPU/cores on those MBX servers?

No, not at all.  The Mailbox Servers have Four Quad core Processors and 24GB RAM.

    Monday, September 20, 2010 7:57 PM
  • the 2 MBX nodes on which I have the issue are dual quad cores with 32 GB of Ram. BPA says the can use a hotfix for performance issues with .NET 2.0 ... I wondered if it coud be related ... probably not.

  • Sounds like fairly different hardware, so I would imagine this shouldn't be affecting things.  Will be very interested to know what the outcome of your case is though however, as these are the same symptoms regardless.

    Thanks.

  • Just an FYI... Microsoft Support is aware of some people hitting this potential issue and is already analyzing data gathered through support cases to determine what may be causing it.

    Any updates on this?

  • No, nothing yet. I asked for a status update yesterday but no response yet. There is no easy cause/fix it would seem. I hope to hear from them soon.
    Friday, September 24, 2010 1:32 PM
  • We got an update via e-mail about 90 minutes. After completing a code review and analysis they believe to have identified the problem.  They have also been able to reproduce the issue. More information is being gathered with reference customers to confirm their findings. More updates will follow when they have more information on how to proceed. Indeed all is well with Exchange 2010 SP1 and PowerShell is your friend :-) Well progress is being made. That’s good.

  • Hi there,

Anything further on this?  It's been a while now.

    Thanks

  • Looks like the issue happens when upgrading from Exchange 2010 RTM to SP1.

I have a fresh install of 2010 SP1 and the console displays all datbase copies!

  • Not really, see MSEBlogger's post, he has the issue with a brand new SP1 install. It's related to SP1 but both upgraded as well as new installations can be affected. I did 3 upgrades. 1 has this issue.

  • OK, so it doesn't have any uniform occurence. Good to know.

Things were fine in my 2010 SP1 box when I tried to re-create the problem.

  • Just got an email on this.  There is a new blog updating on the issue:

Seems there is still no fix.

    Thursday, October 7, 2010 9:12 PM
  • There is no solution yet. In the mail of October 4th they stated that they would fall back to feedback every 14 days unless some important nwes was due. The bug reports are filed so they should be able to plan / build a fix. Since E2K10 SP1 RU1 is out I guess it will be a hotfix or in Roll Up 2 (or later).

  • Hello All,

I just received a mail from Microsoft stating that this issue is expected to be fixed in Exchange 2010 SP1 Roll Up 3. For the momement we are at Roll Up 1, so I guess I might take until November/December to get that. But they are workinging on an incremental update. This has some consequences that you need to take in mind and if you are cool with using powershell you might wanna wait until SP1 roll up 3 comes along.  The incremental update will be roll up specific (i.e when roll up to comes out you'll need a new incremenatla update, it doesn't work with other incremental uopdates etc ...) I'm going to ask to keep my case open so I can get the incremental updates for the lab and just in case the customer wants it.

    Cheers

  • I have to wonder though if they have an incremental update, why can't they just get it into Roll Up 2 in December?  Why do we need to wait until Feb/March for the next one?  We hit them with this bug pretty much as soon as SP1 was released, so I'd think there'd be enough time to fix it already.

URs get locked down (meaning no new code allowed) and into heavy testing. Since UR1 was just releaesd and the blog said UR2 is expected in Dec, my gut feeling (I don't know for sure) is that UR2 may be locked down already.

Since powershell works I'd personally consider this a cosmetic error.

  • It's a little more than pure cosmetic. Its a GUI bug and more anoying to some than others. To some customers Brian the GUI is more than cosmetics ;-) It is in no way impearing the functionality of Exchange, luckily.

Look at the bright side and all the great free powershell training people are getting though! ;)

  • Microsoft confirmed today that the fix will be in Exchange 2010 SP1 Roll Up 3. The interim fix is still in the works. PowerShell is your friend :-)

  • I don't suppose they gave you any sort of rough ETA of when we can expect RU3?

  • Since powershell works I'd personally consider this a cosmetic error.

This is not a cosmetic problem for us.  I found out that if we're using Netapp's Snapmanager for Exchange, we can't backup the DAG if the mailboxes are on the server that is missing in the GUI.  the backup fails so this is a little more important than just how it looks.

anyone heard any news on when this is coming out?

  • Issue looks amazing.
I have a question, were there any situation in past that you had to delete any databases? If yes than i know why it is behaving like this.

    Thanks

Exchange 2010 SP1 Rollup 3 is out and fixes this issues. I'll be installing very soon at sites affected.

  • I have installed Exchange 2010 SP1 Rollup 3 at customer and this did indeed fix this issue finally.

    Thursday, March 10, 2011 8:45 PM
  • same here.

Just an FYI though, it causes an issue with Blackberries where dual messages show up as being sent.

There really is only 1 email being sent, but the blackberries show that 2 were sent.  RIM is working on an update i've heard.

  • Hello Jon,

Yes that was indeed the case. But Microsoft released a new version of E2K10SP1RU3 (V3) that fixes this issue. You can find more information here: http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2011/04/06/announcing-the-re-release-of-exchange-2010-service-pack-1-update-rollup-3-v2.aspx
