  • Hi, I was able to finaly understand what was going on with the assistance of Ben from Microsoft:

It had to do with the Windows Firewall being turned off.

On this server the Firewall also seemed to have “lost” a registry entry, this was why it would not load the Windows Firewall Snap-in.

This is the registry fix to be more specific:

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-CA/smallbusinessserver/thread/565793d3-a1f4-4912-b52f-b7d08c1ee736

After importing the registry entry from another server I was able to turn on the Firewall and then install Exchange SP1 without any problem!

  • Can you look in the C:\ExchangeSetupLogs\ExchangeSetup.log and post the relevant lines?

  • Might be that the process/file you are trying to access is already in use. Make sure all the relavent Exchange Services are stopped (including FPE if applicable) before you start the upgrade process.

  • I tend to agree with Casper, i think some process may be blocking the setup process, did u try to stop exchange services and retry?

    cheers

  • All crucial services should be stopped by setup prior to going ahead with the installation, but some other application / monitor (like scom) might fire it up again if it picks up it is stopped.

  • Hi Guys, thank you for your suggestions.

I'v stopped all Microsoft Exchange services on my machine, and ran the Setup again, but I am still getting the same error.

Are there any other services that I should stop befere beginning the setup?

    Thanks

    Nuno

  • Just a thought but did you run setup as the administrator?  Right click on Setup and select Run as Administrator?

  • Hi Scott, Yes I did.

I am both logged on as administrator, aswell as I've tried to execute the setup as administrator.

    Do you have more suggestions?

    Thank you

  • From the setup log it seems that its failing at "Access to address obj"

Go to this folder ;C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\Mailbox\address and for time being give everyone full permission and then try to run the setup again.

Setup is failing for mailbox role.

    Check the registry key

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Exchange\v14 and delete any watermark key if any and then retry.

  • Any AV software installed?

I'm thinking somethign with Services or AV software.  The setup should stop all services and disable them, this may not be occuring though.

  • I had the same problem, and it was related to the Windows Firewall Service.

We have our firewall turned off, but the service still runs. I had to reset the firewall to defaults, and then turn it back off. After doing this, setup was able to complete successfully.
