Exchange 2010 in particular Outlook (2011) for Mac RRS feed

  • Question

  • Is there any advantages in using Outlook 2011 (Mac) with Exchange 2010?

We're currently using Exchange 2007 with Mac's mail.app, iCal & iPhone without any problems.

I'm curious if there are any advantages in going with Exchange 2010..

Being an Exchange administrator and Mac user myself: The biggest advantage from a user perspective is premium Outlook Web App (in Exchange 2007, Outlook Web Access) support on the Mac. Currently there is no Outlook 2011 for Mac, but supposed to be released by the end of October this year (or a bit later). The current Microsoft e-mail client is Entourage 2008.

You will find a lot of discussions and articles on Mail, iCal, Contacts versus Entourage 2008. As an IMAP4 / Mobile Me only user, my belief is you are better off with Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard's native tools. In addition Entourage 2008 with its Carbon interface feels old-fashioned. However with Exchange 2007 / 2010, Entourage 2008 adds a lot of features not found in SL Mail, iCal, Contacts (see links below). Basically SL brings Exchange 2007 / 2010 support on par with the iPhone, while Entourage 2008 moves into the direction of Outlook 2007, but with lesser functionality, not to speak of Outlook 2010, which I guess most people will consider to be the best Exchange 2010 client.

Now, there have been many leaks of the various Outlook 2011 betas; Microsoft has also published some of them: native Cacao, Ribbons, .PST file support. My impression is that Outlook 2011 will end up as the best e-mail client on the Mac ever. But be aware: My experience with the whole Office 2008 for Mac suite from the very beginning ... the main issues were fist resolved with SP2 (perhaps most of the them with SP1). On the other hand the Mac BU team is very enthusiastic, the Mac MVPs are terrific.

In short, I would go for Office 2008 and Exchange 2010 right now. There's a free upgrade to Office 2011. That's actually what we have done here at home.

P.S. My favorite feature on Exchange 2010 from a user perspective: Personal Archive, which can reside on a different mailbox database with Exchange 2010 SP1. Not accessible from SL or Entourage on the Mac, but from OWA, and it supposed to be supported by Outlook 2011 for Mac.

OWA fully supports Safari on Mac OS X
